View Full Version : Question about mounting laptop revisited?

Hi, I'm doing a research study about the possibility of mounting a laptop to the segway handle bar.

I know there was one other topic about this but I would like to raise a few more questions and concerns.

1st of all, is there any company that makes such a mount specifically for mounting a laptop this way? Or any similar way?

Or is there some other attachment mount you can buy which can be easily modified to fit the segway? Links would be helpful.

And also, since I have never ridden a segway, how difficult would it be to actually use a laptop on a segway while it is on?

Or is there a kick stand of some sort that allows the segway to stand upright when turned off, so that it is still?

I was mainly thinking about using this for security and surveilance purposes. Maybe the security officer can view camera's around while on the segway, or take quick notes with a possible tablet pc?

Please raise any toughts, concerns, or criticism, concerns about this issue. Any help would be appreciated.

No; and no.

No

And also, since I have never ridden a segway, how difficult would it be to actually use a laptop on a segway while it is on?

Done it, it's easy but....risky.

Or is there a kick stand of some sort that allows the segway to stand upright when turned off, so that it is still?

Not sure why you would do this.

Look through my photo album. You will see a unit we designed for Emirates Airlines that does this same thing. It even holds a wireless printer, paper, and a battery pack.

FYI, do NOT make it out of stainless. Dang sun bounces off and blinds you!

Oh, and for now you can only use a Gen1 unit.

Well, first a segway is not a car! Imagine mounting a laptop to a bicycle, what happens when you fall?

Also there is the power issue, I have asked before and it seems that no one has yanked 12vdc from the segway batteries, so you'll be limited to the amount of time the laptop can run.

http://www.ram-mount.com/ Has some pretty cool laptop mounts for cars, you might be able to extend one of the pole mounts and "double strap" it to the center pole of a Gen 1

Good luck.

Jonathan (Macgeek) regularly has a notebook computer on one of his segs. I think he uses a powerbook, and he has designed many mounts.

He is very much the premier pimper, especially of this sort of modification...

How is this a joke, i already said someone asked a similar question in another topic. And Desert_Seg is even saying they got something like that already.

And jgbackes, the reason I got this idea was because I saw a video of a security officer using it on a bicycle. They obvious aren't gonna use it while moving.

As for the falling issue, yes the officer will have to be very careful. But even if it falls, most security officers use panasonic toughbooks. If you know anything about these things, they're pretty much indestructible. Theres test videos of them dropping those things from chest height and everything is still fine.

And the power issue, I was definitely thinking of the laptop relying on its own power. Some laptops have battery life of up to 10 hours so that should be sufficient.

Thanks for the information. O, and heres the video of the biker using a laptop:

Tell me what you think.

Hey Desert_Seg, I was just looking at the pictures of the laptop stand you were talking about. It looks really interesting.

When you said you've actually used a laptop on the segway, can you elaborate on that? How is it easy but risky? And can you actually type with two hands? Is there anyway you can think of to make it even easier to use a laptop this way?

And as for the question about the kickstand, I was basically describing that picture you have where the segway is standing up by itself in your store. Theres looks like small little kickstand coming out of the wheel that keeps it from falling over (Similar to bicycles).

My question is, can that thing hold a person up while they are standing on it? The reason for this is if the person using the laptop needs to use it for quite a while. Instead of wasting the segways battery life, maybe they can shut it off, and put on the "kickstand". Just a thought.

I think It would be distracting to run the computer while gliding. But I have a mounting bracket that holds my camera or my Mini-Cam. I plan to use the mini-cam during the many festivals we have here in Lowell. Especially the Folk Festival in July.

Me and my father has designed a bracket that can be adapted for any use I am working on golf card holder and a segseat assit . It can be adapted to almost any use, as long as it is a gen 1 unit. Any questions please feel free to ask.

I don't know about master Pimper but thanks Karl,

As you can see I mounted a 8" touch screen, with a thumb Keyboard
The laptop is mounted in the side bag, using a LI/ON laptop battery to power both the monitor and the computer laptop.

I can see well past the screen, and if I fell on the seg, the screen would fold and not take the hit, play I have handlebar guards.

Macgeek, thanks for showing me that picture? I was wondering what you usually use the screen for? And is that thumb keyboard similar to something they have on smart phones?

And why are my posts taking forever to show up?

I found it hilarious that you didn't see why anyone would want to be able to park their Segway upright to do anything else-- whether you agreed with their specific reasons for why or not...
