I noticed on the segway web site they list the i180 as incompatible with the "Segway HT Hauler 2".

Can someone tell me why? I thought the 167 was pretty much the same as the 180. Is it a Li-ion battery issue?

P.S. I was in the Air Force, I know how to use a "hammer and a force-it"

LIAR!

Nobody in the Air Force knows how to use a hammer. Pen, maybe. Pencil, probably. Hammer? No way. That means you would have to work. :)

Desert_Seg,

You don't want to watch me put a nuke on a minuteman missile ;-)

Listen to the guys in the airplane club snipe with the guys in the boat club...

You want a hammer? You can't handle a hammer!

Well sort of. I was in the Army....

By the way, the LiIons do raise the segway about 1 inch, and that makes them not fit the original hauler. It is an easy mod to make them work, and if you are interested, I can send you the details...

The bracket will not work for the i2 either, unless you make some other modifications...

Yes, I'd love to see the mod to make it work... I just purchased a hauler from Segway of Ohio. Probably should have made sure it would work before I bought it ;)

See this thread for a discussion of why you can not use the hauler for a i180. http://www.segwaychat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9565

Yes it is a lithium battery issue. The lithium's are 1 inch thicker and that moves the top support past the thinner top section of the handlebar shaft and the top brace of the hauler will not fit on the thicker lower section.

Just like an Airman...using a hammer to put a nuke on! :)

The Navy Jets are flying over the dealership right now in formation.... LOUD ones too!

GRADUATION at Annapolis.

COOL, glad I have a Segway, cause there is no other way to get around town.

Well... Yeah, if that's the only tool you have, every problem is a nail ;)

Back on topic. Was there a hauler built that did work with the i180? The thread above seems to mention that there was one.

The i180 came out two years ago, the Gen2s have been out almost a year, what's the holdup on the new haulers?

Yes, There was a second version of the hitch hauler that works for the I-180.:)

Reading this makes me think back fondly on an magical moment from the early seventies....

I had ordered an upper TACAN antenna for one of the A-7's in our squadron. (a small blade antenna about 3"x4"x1/2")

It was hard for me to believe, since it's a very common item, but the ship's supply said there were none onboard.

So we waited... and waited... and waited some more.......

Having long since robbed the "hangar queen" for the part, we STILL waited...

Finally, after weeks of waiting, the order was delivered to the shop.

In my hands, in its original oiled paper wrapping, with two digits of the part number transposed from my antenna, was (wait for it....)

HAMMER, BLACKSMITH'S (1) EACH
U.S. ARMY CAVALRY CORPS

I really, really wanted to mount it on the aircraft long enough for a picture, but the skipper said NO! He even kept the hammer, mumbling something about speaking to the ship's supply officer while he had this evil grin on his face.... ;)

We have a modification kit available which raises the upper support to accomodate all Gen 1 Segways with either NiMH or LiIon batteries. Powder coated with stainless steel hardware. It's $14.95 plus S&H. But try yours first, it may already be compatible.

See this thread for further discussions about the hauler, including a description of a DIY fix and and images of a mock-up of that fix:

Germane discussion starts at post #35.

P.S. JIMBO posted while I was composing. Looks to be a good solution if you are having the problem.

I agree that those other threads offer all that is needed for the modifications...

I want to add that this thread has referenced several times that the Hauler has a problem with i-180s. That is not accurate.

That hauler is designed for any gen 1 segway. It will fit the 167, the 170, the 180 and I believe the p-133 as well.

Since that design, they introduced new batteries, then made them backwards compatable to the 167, 170, and 180. If you add the LiIons to any gen one machine, the hauler needs to be modified.

The pertenent factor is the batteries, not the model number.

If you do the simple modification which simply lifts the bracket an inch or two, it will still be compatable with all the models listed above. SO, once modified, the hauler can be used for any gen 1 model, regardless of battery...
