I've seen many references to gen1 and gen2 Segways. Would someone tell me what the difference is, how to spot the difference, and when did the gen2 come out?

I'd feel dumber if I didn't ask.

Gen II came out about Sept. of last year.
Somebody is sure to give exact date ,time, second....

Easy to spot the difference. Gen II all have leensteer, the whole control shaft "leans" to turn as opposed to the Gen I "twist " turn.

The rest of the difference is bells and whistles, I'm sure most will disagree with that, but thats my opinion.

The easy way to spot a Gen II is the control shaft.

When the Generation Two Segways came on the scene. Or at least we were suppose to keep quiet until that time, which was when they were announced to the general public.

The Gen Two machince is different in a number of ways from the Gen One Machine. The I-2 and X-2 are more sophisticated machines with different steering - the Lean Steer where the whole control shaft is how you steer, the key now a detatachable stopwatch like key fob, to different tires and wheels a center console where the steering is located and a higher level of technology in the platform base, a security system and so much more. The I-2 comes in White and Black where as the X-2 is in Black with a Silver handlebar.

On the Gen One, you have the first machine the I-167 and it's brother the e-167 (The E was only to be available to commercial users - it has a mode where it will stand on it's own, called the e-stand) then came the P-133 - basically a smaller in statue I-167 then came the I-170 same as the I-167 but it was in a dark black or blue with a carbon fiber looking fenders. Prior to that all the machines used the Nickle Metal battery, about the time the I-170's came on the market is when the LiOn batteries were being talked about. Then came the XT machine with the big knobby tires, and that was the first real Lithium battery user, as it needed more power to go the distance with it's bigger tires. Then when the last of the generation one machines came out they were the I-180's. They came in a number of colors, Red Yellow Midnight Blue and bright Blue, they also came with the option to run the Lithium batteries, though there was much problems early on with the LiOns batteries, with batteries failing.

All along different accessories have appeared, many of which have been inspired by users in this community who have developed them for their own use, like the confort pads. The bike accessory industry supplies alot of the accessories like lights and pedestrian alerts.

Now that it is spring, go out to a local group meet, and get to see the variety of Segways, and how their users haver personalized them.

Thank you for the enlightenment. I was trying to make it more complicated than it really was.
