Well, it was bound to happen, although I would have preferred it didn't happen to me.

Two nights ago, while returning from a glide, I and my x2 met the front end of a moving car. Yep, a head-on collision that, surprisingly, resulted in minimal damage and that allowed me to do my best impersonation of Superman.

Tally:

Car - slightly dented bumper (under $100)
x2 - bent left handle / some scrapes (~$300)
Human - broken toe, abrasions, and some very colorful bruises (~$400)
Ability to fly - Priceless

The accident resulted from me avoiding a first fast moving (more than 100 KmPH) auto. My evasive action bounced me off an unmovable object (curb) and right into the path of the second vehicle. Witnesses say that upon impact (and my airborne role) I immediately went into a tuck and that when I landed I rolled quite beautifully. I guess the years of gymnastics paid off. Of course, all I remember is BANG! THUD! OWWWW!

I am most impressed by the sturdiness of the x2. It got banged hard and yet other than than slightly bent handle / fender and some scrapes, it is in excellent shape.

Me, on the other hand, am showing my age. I actually listened to the doctor and stayed home for two days, with my foot up. Of course, that goes out the window tomorrow when I go out for a glide...albeit a short glide 'cause this dang toe hurts like HELL!

So, three falls in just over two years. Two falls doing stunts, one fall that resulted in a stunt (me flying).

Steven

Are you sure the fast moving vehicle might not have been a Sheik on a carpet :) ? Glad you're not hurt more. What is it about us Seg gliders that makes us want to imitate Superman? Hey Pam, have you ever done Superwoman?

OOOH....AAAAH....Steven, you KNOW you're too old for that stuff!

And playin in the traffic, for goodness sake...your Mom raised a smarter boy than that!

Sorry to hear about the toe, and the bruises. It all heals, it just seems to take forever to do so at our age. Take it easy on yourself!

All - Thanks for all the kind words. Some comments though:

'Cruiter - Couldn't have been a Sheikh on a magic carpet that I dodged...the "carpet" just wasn't that nice!

Wayne - There are times my mother would love to debate you about my intelligence but you're right, I was taking a shortcut that in the end really wasn't worth the 10 seconds or less it was saving me.

The silver lining? I did sell 9 segways that day (all our stock and then a couple of more) and was supposed to sell the x2 I was.

When a school bus ran over her p model, it then did not run over her.

The P got lodged under the wheels and she was hurt but not killed, as she could have been.

The School bus made a right on red, without looking to see if there was anyone in the cross walk, and gunned it.

I saw the P yesterday - and it is one sad little machine, but it saved a life, no question.

The knocked down glider was out gliding with us yesterday for our annual new years glide - so like falling off a horse, you need to get back up!

Steven,

Glad to hear your ok, but man, you cannot go mixing it with the big toys on a Seg.

Foot injuries can be seriously debilitating, I damaged my right foot earlier this year (Motorcycle...don't even go there!) and had to rest up for soooooo long. Not broken but deep cut and unable to stitch etc.

Hope the business does not suffer as a result of the broken toe. I guess you where thinking more about the margin on 9 units than the traffic!

Speedy recovery.

I am soooo glad to hear that your injuries are not more serious. Having recently gone through something similar, I truly do know what it feels like to do the "superman impression". And while you can control how you land alot more than I thought, you dont' have much control where you land. If it's in traffic thing can take a tragic turn...

I know an injury to your toe doesn't might not seem serious, but they're used alot during gliding. So if the doctor says "stay off it", please curtail your gliding. Maybe even for a week longer than he suggests. Once you've started gliding again, we both know you'll be doing it avidly and giving that toe a real work out.

Finally, you omitted one key fact in your story. Was the original irresponsible driver identified and remained at the scene to cover the damage he caused? I'm not sure how these types of incidents are covered in a foreign country, but I'd hope that in Dubia it works like here in the USA where people are held accountable for their actions.

ps - Another reason to let your employees handle all of the gliding/demos for customers is you've just become one of the worst pieces of PR for selling segway's locally. As soon as the topic turns towards your injuries, you'll be asked in detail about how/why the accident occured. None of this will help sell segways in your area!

Great way to start the New Year, Steven.

witnesses:
Oh look, he has spinners. I thought the Segway was supposed to be the glider? :)

Hope your toe heals soon. Oh, Happy New Year.

So glad to hear it wasn't worse, Steven!!!! Yikes, amazing how fast some of those things occur! Thank goodness you had years of gymnastics behind you.
