okay-

i need some help with this article:
http://www.bookofseg.com/ouch/

fact checking, editing, all that...who knows, the entire thing could be really wrong.

basically, the goal of the article is to show that we all need to look at the benefits vs. the risk for our transportation needs.

cheers,
pt

I thought seeing the other statistics were enlightening - need to keep this "what if" stuff in perspective. thanks for posting this.

I'm not sure about this article, pt. One of the reasons people state for choosing an SUV is that if they're going to be in an accident, it's safer to have the mass on your side. With that logic, I sure would rather be ensconced in our BMW than hanging ten on my Segway when the fateful event happens. You seem to be assuming that a car accident will only happen if you're in a car, as opposed to a travelling accident or some other such viewpoint.

good point, i don't know where this article might end up. it has been interesting finding all this data (there's new stuff up there now too) i guess my thought is-- being in a car means you're chances of being in a car accident are greater than not being in a car? the the mortality is different as well.

85,000 pedestrians are injured every year in the usa by cars-- compare that to to 3.2 million who were injured in cars...in 2001 4,882 pedestrians died from cars-- compared to about 42,000 people who were killed in cars. to me, it seems that you roll the dice more in cars, and if 77% of car accidents are less than 15 miles away, well-- i'm going to pick something that's not a car if i can.
