today i went in naked...well, without a front bag that is. it felt kinda naked without one. for most of my segway ht use, i've had a one type of front bag or another, i really like both front bags: the black one being able to hold a little more and have a more sophisticated-look to it, and the new front bag being very useful as it comes right off in a snap and has a should strap. but today, i went in without a front bag at all-- and for some reason, i really liked it, i'm not sure why but i think it's because i could only see the ground / ocean / mountains / sky and not the top of the bag.

i think my final review of what bag i like the most might be "depends what i'm doing". if i'm just going to work and i'm not on a project that requires me to have lots of gear, i think i'll just use a bigger backpack. for grocery shopping or trips that require more cargo than my messenger bag, i'll go for the new front bag that can be quickly removed. for weeks when i'm hauling lots of gear around, i'll use the black front bag.

cheers,
pt

From the title of this post I though you were trying to maximize your range by decreasing rider's weight to the "bare" minimum (shedding your clothes!).

But alas, nope.. and I get the point ;)

I'll add that I don't own an official Segway HT bag although I'd like my wife to get me one for my next birthday! I've been using a plain 'ol Jansport backpack.. I tie the adjustment straps together around my Seg's steering column. It does the job.. ain't pretty though.. and not as functional as the new official Segway HT front bag which has all those kewl pockets!

I also find it strange to ride without a bag... so I always ride with one, even if its empty. Hey, 'ya never know if you're going to carry something back from your destination!

Oh, and it's where I keep my kryptonite lock.. although you can just loop the lock a few times around the base of the steering column and lock it in place.. that works too!

When I did my south Florida trek, I was without a bag (it was so much easier to leave it off when I was assembling and disassembling), and was amazed at how much smaller the machine felt. Now, that's wierd. I now have both, and will probably use the soft one. It seems a bit larger inside, and I do like being able to put my things in pockets, rather than having them rattle around in the bag. Keeps the postcards clean, and there's a nice pocket for the phone/GPS.

With the recent post about the new bag, I wanted to float this subject to the top to mention that I prefer pictures of the HT when it is "Naked." While a few pictures of mine have been taken with the light and/or cable lock, the best ones are when an HT appears to be freshly unpacked! The photos of the front are my favorite.

I am glad the new bag will be easily removable.

After about 2 months of segging I too prefer the 'stock' look. Much easier to collapse the shaft fully for when my ht rides in my rl's trunk. Also demos are easier - I've done hundreds -- you can easily adjust for different riders and grab the post when riders mount for first time. For cargo I love my north face day-and-a-half pack. It comfortably holds contents of a full grocery bag, except odd items like a digiorno pizza are a tight fit. Only drawback when demoing 'naked'-- people often ask 'how do you carry stuff' and you have to explain how the front mounted bags work or use a backpack, etc.

On a related note, the weight of the e series is about 12 lb over the i. Is that the weight of the three storage bags attached, or does the e have a beefier base/ bigger batteries. Maybe an e owner knows.

I have done nothing but ride naked - my bag hasn't yet arrived.

Actually - I am even having second thoughts about how much I will use it. I use a drawstring backpack (just a sack with shoelace type strings - made by Nike) and I really like it. At a push I can also hang it from the handlebars - one string over each handle.

It will be interesting to get the bag and see just how much I use it.

Pam, when did you come down to SoFla?!

I had a business trip to Tampa in February (I think) or late January. That's when I went to Celebration to check out NEVrland. Then I went back down several weeks ago to the training in Orlando, where they were gracious enough to let me hang out for a few hours and buy some t-shirts <G>. I'll probably have a trip down to Ft. Lauderdale at some point - that's where we do our training for the computer system we use at the college where I work. But I don't know when that will be. I try to limit those trips to times when they're dealing with either curriculum or instructor resource issues.
