Just curious... is it true that UPS and Fed Ex will fly Segways with lithium ion batteries on non passenger flights?

That is what it says on this eBay ad...

We can ship this Segway anywhere in the world with the Lithium ion Batteries. Ups and Fedex will ship on air cargo nonpasenger aircraft.

Yes, that add is correct in that the Segway can be shipped via FedEx or UPS. However I wouldn't touch that auction with a 10 foot pole.

Who in their right mind would sell a "like new" Segway for only $500?

And just to clarify, Segways with batteries can be shipped by any person and via any non-passenger conveance (truck, train, plane, etc). However, loose batteries may only be shipped by AUTHORIZED HazMat Handlers, again only via non-passenger conveance.

Steven, A loose seg can be shipped to anyone via ground transport. Even if you send a complete Seg using an expedited (air) service however, it must be classed as HazMat. (UN3171, Battery Powered Vehicle, Class 9) And I believe that goes for overseas also...

There are two things that are wrong with the auction though...

#1, According to Visa, Mastercard, AmEx and Discover, it is against policy to assess any fee if a cardholder chooses to use a credit card. That can easily have a merchant service agreement pulled and a hefty fine slapped on any merchant pretty quick...

#2, Shipping is incorrect, as stated above.

It sounds like they are trying to get rid of inventory and I believe that it is an honest auction but if it goes international without the right documentation then there could be a $20,000 fine per each infraction...

Austin,

We are in agreement. I'm saying that only the batteries require HazMat handling training.
