Just posted on www.usfirst.org:

"To all FIRST Robotics Competition Teams,

Preparations for the 2003 season are well underway and I hope all of you are as excited about the coming year as we are here at FIRST. We have worked hard this summer to make several changes to the program as a result of your ideas and suggestions. These changes should make 2003 better for veteran teams and a fantastic year to be a rookie.

Event registration will open on October 1, 2002 and close on December 13, 2002. In order to have all teams get registered for their preferred event we will be using a staggered event registration process. You will be allowed to register for one regional competition and the Championship (if you qualify) through November 1, 2002. At that time teams can add a second event and on November 15 registration will be open for all Regional events. We think this change will eliminate teams being closed out of a local event. Several events are still marked "TBD" until we can confirm contracts with the venues. Event registration for these events will be closed until they are clearly posted with a site and date.

Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, FIRST will be giving all teams a preseason kit that includes the EduRobot kit. There are also workshops and tutorials as well as software from Autodesk, Microsoft and Filemaker. Each of these products will be shipped out to teams as soon as payment (check or credit card only) is received for at least one event. The EduRobot kit and software should help teams develop brainstorming and design skills before the start of the actual robot build period. We are enthusiastic about the possibilities offered by this product.

There are additional exciting changes to the kit of parts, which will offer greatly simplified robot construction for all teams. We have worked to provide components that will allow for the rapid construction of a working robot base with a target of all teams building the base in less than four days.

FedEx has confirmed their continued support of the FIRST program by again offering complimentary shipping of robots to one regional event and the Championship. There are some restrictions shipping within Canada and from Alaska and Hawaii. Please consult the manual for details.

We at FIRST are looking forward to the coming season. If you need assistance, Team Support is available from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM EST. Please don't hesitate to Contact Us.

Bob Hammond
Director, Robotics Competition"
