Jeff Gordon: Floating on air?
Indianapolis - NASCAR drivers are not known for being patient, but they had to wait out a day of rain before resuming testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Jeff Gordon took his first laps since last weekend's controversial win in Chicago.
Riding a Segway to his garage at the Speedway, Jeff Gordon looks like he's floating on air. He might be. Since announcing his engagement to Belgian actress and model Ingrid Vandebosch, Gordon has celebrated with her in victory lane two of the last three weekends.
Gordon collected his 75th career win at Chicagoland Speedway. He also pushed his way back into the top 10 chase in points by pushing Matt Kenseth out of the way in the final laps.
"I've seen it, definitely, and my thoughts haven't changed. It was - I take full responsibility for it. I know that I didn't intentionally try to wreck him," he said.
Gordon looks forward to racing on his home track in just a few weeks. The Pittsboro native has the most wins, laps led and money earned at Indy of any NASCAR driver. Gordon grew up dreaming of racing in the Indy 500. He wound up in stock cars. Then along came the Brickyard 400, and Gordon won the first-ever event in 1994. Now he goes for his 5th win at Indy.
Gordon tries to equal the mark set by Michael Schumacher this month with five wins in the US Grand Prix. "As much as I love this race and I'm glad that I've won here, I still don't compare those wins to what the guys have done in the Indy 500 and the same way - kind of look at the F1 race as well - it's just a totally different event and totally different types of cars," said Gordon.
News that Danica Patrick is exploring a move to NASCAR sounds good to Gordon. But he says any woman coming into his series needs to be with a top team. "You can't just come in. Just being there doesn't do it. You gotta come it, and you gotta be competitive. And I think it would be a great thing for this sport."
Shawna Robinson was the last female driver to race in the Cup series, four years ago. But she ran just a few races and finished way in the back.
