Good Morning!

Sean Schuff - Teacher mentor on Team 93 N.E.W. Apple Corps - Plexus Technology Group and Appleton Area School District.

This will be my fourth year as a team mentor and our teams 7th season overall. We've even gone so far as to build a school (in a theoretical sense for now) around FIRST Robotics and all of the educational opportunities it has to offer. Visit both our sites at www.aasd.k12.wi.us/tesla

I'm looking forward tousing this site as a way to interact with other mentors and sahre ideas and thoughts for this years challenge.

First question for anyone who knows - What is the story with the Championship Event this year? Anyone know anything?

Hello, one and all!

I am Griffin Mitchell, a long-time nerd and short-time FIRST
participant. I am, as can be observed in the more legible portions
of my signature, a mentor (of sorts) for team 814 - in other words,
I'm now too much of an old fart to actually be a driver or anything
exciting like that, so I'm stuck with sitting back and being content
with the fact that I am the only one on the team who has the
slightest idea how to program. My job this year is to make sure I'm
not anymore.

Anyway, I think I might actually start my time off here by trying
(and probably failing) to answer a question, namely the one posed
above (or below, depending on sort order) this post: "What is the
story with the Championship Event this year? Anyone know anything?"

If I understand what is being asked, the odd-numbered teams are
admitted automatically - but don't quote me on that.

What I DO know (or can at least look up) is the criteria for
admission. If you meet one of the following conditions,
congratulations! You qualify automatically! All former Championship Chairman’s Award winners (1992-2002) Prior year
Championship winners Teams that have participated in every
competition year (1992-2002) Current year Regional Event winners
Current year Regional Chairman’s Award winners Current
year Technical Award winners at Regional Events (Driving Tomorrow’s
Technology, Industrial Design, Leadership in Controls, and Quality
Awards)
If not, don't loose hope! There's still more...
If you don't meet the above criteria, you can qualify if you have a
total of five points on this scale. Regional or Championship
Divisional winner - 3 points Regional or Championship
Divisional finalist - 2 points Regional Chairman's Award
winner - 3 points FIRST-Judged Award winner at Regional or
Championship Event - 2 points Top Seed at Regional or
Championship Event - 1 point Top Rookie Seed at Regional or Championship Event - 1 point
Just so all of you can get ticked off at me for wasting your
bandwidth now, I'll mention what I should have mentioned about three
pages ago: All this information (and quite a bit more) is available at
http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/res_art9.htm.

Have fun reading through the jumbled masses of text, and appologies
to those who try to read this if this doesn't line-wrap.

Hola,
My name is Kyle and im part of Hart High School's Robotics team. I'm new to the scene and do not know much about the competition or what robotics is truly about. But that's what I'm here for, to learn, oh yah, and build a way cool web page. Hopefully, I can get some feedback from people who are doing web pages for their team on how to set it up and what to put on it, when I get it up on the internet that is.
Until then, I hope to talk to you all some more, and I will hopefully be a regular here (looking up stuff most likely), but also hopefully helping in any way possible.
Wow, if I wrote too much, dont be mad, I just finished writing an english essay and am in the "writing mood".
Well, good luck to you all I hope we all become friends.
Adios,
Kyle (Vtec)

This is Hester from Team 492. We are the Titan Robotics Club and we were 2nd in the seattle regional last year. and winners of the judges award in los angeles competition. Um. I am in charge of Public Relations and all that other fun marketing stuff, and some money on our team. I'm one of the three exec student members. But building the first robot is the funnest part of working for this club. So that's what i do first. Our website is being moved to another server right now so there's nothing there. (its amazing how as soon as a boy takes over on the web site it disappears)
If you want to contact our team for anything ( we are in bellevue washington 5 miles east of seattle) feel free to e-mail me.
thanx.
Peace out.

Hello,
I am a student/veteran participant (at least compared to the ppl on my team now) of team 926. the CAPacitors! (the CAP is capitalized b/c our school uses CAPS as our general team name for all sports and compeditive activites.. we just adapted it)
Even though it is a newbie team i was there all of our past year. Now i see that this forum is a great resource for me.

Even though im on the list as a team member the days that they chose to meet are the only ones i cannot be there for, so, im kinda in the dark and being quickly left behind.
If anyone has any suggestions i would gladly take them.
I have already tried to get e-mail from our group e-mail and also from individuals on the team. The group e-mail dosent send to me and my teammates dont remember to take the time to e-mail me!

Im now starting to wear the E off my keyboard. ( too many e-mail requests)
anyway i hope that this forum is a great sucess!

i will probably be on daily.

I am hoping that I get to be the driver this year, but you never know ;).

2000 my stepson (ss) was beginning high school and our family rule was 2 extracurriculars. The robotics' program wasn't publicized well, but I spied it out and emailed the teacher. He emailed me back suspiciously, "who are you?" *shrug* a parent. He curtly explained the program wouldn't start til Jan.

Ss attended all meetings, but sociability isn't his strong point. The VP made an unpopular decision, including ss in going to FL altho he didn't do much. The team won regionally and nationally. There was enthusiasm showing in ss.

2002 my husband joined the team as mentor trying to help ss stay in the program. My 17yo gregarious daughter joined for the same reason. My husband, the computer guru, had a ball also helping building the robot. We had no clue how much my daughter would thrive in the program. She'd never "taken" to other extracurricular stuff. Her sister-in-law is amazed, remarking, "I can't believe Angela's doing this." Angela worked at the machine shop, co-drove at all the competitions, and became RUHS President of robotics 2003.

2003 my freshman daughter and I joined. My freshman daughter took a welding class over the summer before her freshman year with her stepdad cuz a robotics' alumni had mentioned girls make the best welders. My 14yo, the youngest to have ever taken the welding class, kicked her stepdad's butt in the class.

Then, with our partners - a family from our rival school MCHS, we began to make excellent progress in making the team better. A year round program, a single facility to work in, gracious professionalism a value that was ignored in the past became a priority, I discovered a flair for publicity and fundraising. Our robotics team is now EASY for people to find out about.

My ss's dropped out. The rest of us are having a ball.

My 14yo daughter is recruiting people like crazy. They don't know they want to be in robotics. They don't know the kind of fun they're going to have. They don't know all the different kinds of skills they can learn, and what they're capable of. They're finding out.

Redondo Union High School, Redondo Beach CA USA, and Mira Costa High School, Manhattan Beach CA USA - 2 rival schools, one FIRST team.

I'm a rookie member from a rookie team. I'm Nelson Green and I'm a senior on team #1108 from Paola, Kansas. I manage the teams website (still being worked on) http://www.geocities.com/robohyo and am the co-captain. We began our FIRST season by writing a winning grant to NASA through KU and are going to attend the Lone Star Regional. I am dissapointed that I only discovered this program in my senior year but am excited to get started. The field of engineering is an interest to me and I am planning to go to K-state or MIT (hopefully, if Woodie will let me in) for college and pursue chemical engineering. Our team is learning lots of new things and the season hasn't begun officially. We get to start the fun stuff saturday.

Hello,

My name is Erin Rapacki, and I am a FIRSTaholic. For 2001 & 2002 I was a high-school student member on Buzz #175. My senior year, I participated a lot with the team's Chairman's Award effort... we won the National Chairman's Award that year and got kicked off stage by Mandy Moore in Epcot after recieving the trophy. Heh, it was a very exciting evening.

Now, I am a Sophomore Mechanical Engineering student at Northeastern Univeristy. I have been a mentor on team #125, the NU-TRONS, for these past two years. I am also the founder of an upcoming off-season event, the Beantown Blitz. I concieved the idea for NU to host an event while staring at a wall during Physics class my freshman year, inspiration happens in odd places:)

I am now a intern/coop at DEKA Research & Development for these six months (Jan - June 2004). I have also worked at Hamilton Sundstrand for the past two summers (JSF & Space Suit).

I'll be 'manning' the FIRST Robotics Conference while in Atlanta, I served on that committee as well.

Gotta go back to being 19!

I have been on this site for 2 months and just noticed there was a FIRST forum, just having too much fun I guess.

Anyway. Currently I am the teacher moderator/Mentor of team 360 the Revolution, in Tacoma Washington. Been here for three years.
Previously I was there when team 258, the Sea Dawgs got started. Those were the days.

Anyway, always wondering how many Segways will be at various Regionals.

Anyone planning on bringing a Segway to Vegas this year?

<edit> I just noticed I was below Erin on here. She introduced me to my current i167.
Thanks Erin!

Hi my name is Matt Kinnison I am a machinist for Team #63 The Red Barons we are from McDowell High School in Erie Pa. This is my second year as a FIRST student and I will never forget my experiences with FIRST. Before I joined I had heard of Dean Kamen and had admired him but I never thought I would get a chance to meet him in person.
Now all I have to do is earn enough money to buy a Segway and life will be perfect

My Name is Brian. This was my rookie year as a mentor for a FIRST Team (1675). I am an Embedded Systems Engineer with Rockwell Automation. We were fortunate to have a young man on our team with some JAVA experience who picked up the 'C' programming very quickly so my job was easy. But I can see how it can be puzzling to others especially within the Framework of the the default program provided.
So if you need help drop me a note.

Brian
