anyone have pictures of an open handlebar with clear view of the electronics inside, or instructions how to open the handlebar?

what are you looking for?

i am also looking for pictures of the handlebar opened up, i broke the left steering grip and i want to see where the electronics are inside the handlebar before drilling inside.

If your thinking of drilling into the handlebar at the left grip for a remount
don't bother. The circuit board is there and you will drill into it
Basically the handle bar is junk either way
Unless Macgeek the wizard has created a fix

Has any one done this that could post a few pic's.
I will weigh in and say that on the right side (Non-steering) a repair is relatively easy, and very strong.
I have drilled and used a threaded stud, then epoxy over everything and a sanding and paint. Strong as or stronger than original.
In this case, however, because of the electronics involved, you cannot add the internal structure that I have in the past...
If this were my case, and I had the right side in good shape, I might consider moving the steering components to the right, where it is still factory original, then repair the left as a static grip as I described above.
I find no particular advantage to left steering over right, other than it is the way it came from the factory. In a short time, you could learn, I imagine, to be just as proficient steering with your right hand as left.
Especially considering how you were steering (not) when you had this accident which is the source for this thread!

Hello Jonathan,
I want to change the segway steering from left to right, because my left handle is broken. Or maybe change the handlebar to bicycle handle. And i don't want to interfere the instrument in the handlebar that can make them unusable.

Wow, That quote from me must be old. So be it. There is circuitry in the center of the handlebar, and a board that is centered top to bottom that goes most of the way accross. There is a similar casting on either end that makes moving the sensors for the steering relatively easy, and the wiring inside the handlebar is long enough for you to move the pick-up from the left to the right. The biggest problem that I have run into is damage that you do to the plastic handlbar itself, trying to release the various components to move them. Be very careful with your dremmel tool. (It may be easier to get the needed steering hookup from another broken handlebar)
Jonathan has the best pictures, documentation, and knowledge of the inside of a working handlebar. In case he is away for the weekend, you should be able to find some of his old posts and pictures on this forum if you search.
Good luck.

You can see this photo in my photo gallery. if you look close on the left side, you can see some of the circuitry that I added. (Switches)
Clearly, to do this, I have opened my share of handlebars. The wiring for the trip computer goes thru the handlebar as well. (The music device was just added for that day)

Unfortunately, I do not have any interior photos posted. I will look around, but Jon is king here.

Thank you for your reply, Karl.
I want to make change in my handlebar (and trying to find bicyle handlebar that I think good for replacing my broken handlebar), and I think I am not too carefull for using dremmel tool, that is why I need to see the inside picture first.

Dave, how do you plan to use a bicycle handlebar in place of the left side twist grip for steering? The twist grip uses two magnets built into the twisting part and a hall-effect sensor built into the handlebar. You would need to replace this mechanism.
Perhaps if you posted a picture of how your handlebar is broken, we can offer better suggestions on how to fix it.

Photos are a bit blurry, can't tell if twist sensor is intact. But it does appear to be snapped off right where the sensor is.
If you hold the broken left grip in place where it belongs and turn on the PT, does it operate normally (responds to twisting) ? That would tell if the sensor still functions.
If the sensor doesn't work, it would make more sense to obtain a replacement handlebar.
If the sensor does work, due to the complexity of fixing it properly, it may make more sense to sell it for scrap and buy a replacement handlebar.
Probably don't want to make this a Do-It-Yourself project if you're not sure what needs to be done.
Here's a thread with some pics of one of macgeek's handlebars:
http://forums.segwaychat.com/showthread.php?t=12621
His doesn't have a broken handle, so there isn't really a good shot of the steering sensor.

Hi all,
Thank you for the responses.
My steering sensor still working in good condition.
I have checked the other thread, and I hope I can find a way to fix my handlebar and maybe change it to bicycle handlebar.
