BART RIDERS TO HAVE ACCESS TO BICYCLES: BART riders at the Pleasant Hill station can give their feet a rest under a new program that allows commuters to use bicycles and Segway scooters to get around.

Dubbed EasyConnect, the program is part of a two-year test to find ways to keep commuters out of their cars.

Employees at participating businesses -- 10 so far -- can pick up bicycles or the stand-up scooters at special electronic lockers at the Treat Boulevard station and use them to get back and forth to work after riding BART. The wheeled devices are also stored at the businesses so employees can use them for errands or business trips during the day -- all in an effort to defeat one of the biggest deterrents to riding transit: isolationism.

"Some people find it difficult to take transit to work because if they do, they have no way of getting around during the day," said Susan Shaheen of California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways, a collaboration of UC Berkeley and Caltrans.

Employees and businesses of the Contra Costa Centre, or other area employers, can sign up for the test program at www.easyconnect.com.
