JUNE 12, 2006 -- A few Wilmington police officers are testing a new way to patrol city streets. Police commanders are considering purchasing a battery-powered Segway scooter for downtown duty. The scooters aren't cheap. They cost about $5,000, though the fuel cost is minimal. The two-wheeled machine travels at a top speed of 12-miles per hour, and officers say it is a good way to maneuver in tight spaces downtown.
