Segway Memorial Ride Across Minnesota
Announced Wednesday June 14, 2006
Team starts unique 500-mile ride to raise funds for American Lung Association
LUVERNE, Minn., June 14 /PRNewswire/ http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060614/cgw026.html?.v=60
-- Beginning Monday, June 19, a team of experienced Segway riders will stand and ride their unique electric vehicles approximately 535 miles from Beaver Creek, a town in the southwestern tip of the state near the South Dakota border, to Grand Portage, a community perched near the Canadian border. The epic -- and slow -- ride across the Gopher State will honor the memories of the thousands of Minnesotans who have lost their lives to lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and other lung diseases. The effort is a fundraiser for the American Lung Association of Minnesota.
"It should take our team eight days to complete the journey, provided all goes well with the weather," said Keith Anderson, president of Segway of Minnesota, based in Minneapolis. "I don't worry too much about the machines, as these vehicles have proven to be very durable and are used in warehouses, police patrols, and rental shops all over the country. They may look like toys, but they are really tough little workhorses."
When Anderson first began discussing a possible fundraiser with the American Lung Association of Minnesota, the discussion focused on demonstrating the quiet, non-polluting vehicles during the 3.5 mile Asthma Walk fundraiser in Minneapolis. "The Segways were such a hit at the Asthma Walk, we asked Keith if he wouldn't mind a longer ride to raise money for lung disease," said Fran Oberreit, planned giving manager for the local Lung Association. "As it turned out, Keith and his team will be going a lot further than anyone expected."
