Yes Bystander it is a great site.
The hotel and dates will be posted as soon as we sign our contract. The hotel is very well priced and with a phenomenal view! Thanks to Barry Fulton of Segway Long Beach for assisting in the hotel search. Jim Headley of Segway Orange County is promising to send 100 of his best customers (and he has hunderds) to the Fest.
We hope to have attendees from all over the world as well. It is only a non-stop flight from MANY cities to get here. The hotel is 25 minutes from LAX and even closer to Long Beach Airport serviced by Jet Blue. There will be plenty of rentals and we will work out the logistics as to how to ship lithiums. Great glides including possibly a significant off road glide for XT's and expert I machine gliders.
We will be putting together a 2006 Long Beach Fest committee. Please e-mail me if you are interested in assisting. The goal is to have the best Fest ever. Jonathan "Macgeek" may even move here to assist in making this Fest F_A_B_U_L_O_U_S !!!! CMonkey, Bystander, Mr Protocol, as well as all of the California Segway businesses will hopefuly work shoulder to shoulder to make this the best Fest ever!

I really want to come, but I first have to see how expensive it's going to get before I make any comitment.
Will, please let me know when you know the details of the hotel and segway rental.
I checked the flight company, they have a direct flight (which I should be able to pay with my frequent flyer points) to Los Angeles.
The long beach website says "only a quick 25 minutes from Long Beach." Do they mean by car or with another plane?
Kind regards,

Another link for the 2006 SegFest FAQ:
LAX to Long Beach (http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?newaddr=LAX&taddr=&csz=Los+Angeles%2C+CA&country=us&tcsz=Long+Beach%2C+CA&tcountry=us&name=Los+Angeles+International+Airport)
It's 21 miles distance, so that 25 minutes is by car (traffic permitting). There is a light rail system called the "green line" and the "blue line" (http://www.mta.net/images/rail_map.pdf). Which runs from LAX to Long Beach. I've not used it, so I hesitate to recommend it.
It's my understanding that some of the details need to be finalized before the name and location of the hotel are officially released, it may take a few more days.
As for HT rentals, I believe the closest Segway dealer is Segway of Long Beach (http://www.segwaylb.com/). Other dealers in the area are Segway of Orange (http://www.segwayorangecounty.com/001/usa/), Segway of Newport Beach (http://www.segwayorangecounty.com/001/usa/pressreleaseitem3234.html?id=90) (the Newport Beach location is a subsidiary of the O.C. operation), and Segway of Los Angeles (http://www.segway.la/) (in Santa Monica) Segway of L.A. also has a store in Burbank, but it's not close.
There's also a listing for transportation links at the Long Beach visitors page (http://www.visitlongbeach.com/listings/index.cfm?action=cover&catID=22).

Hotel is quoting $124 to $134 double with 15% tax that takes it up to $143 / $155 a night, put a third person in the room bump that up by 10 bucks.
Once we have the contract signed and ready to go, we will announce as much info as we have.

Florin,
25 minutes from LAX by car is realistic but not on a Friday afternoon. It might be 40 minutes if there is bad traffic. I recommend airport shuttles either Super Shuttle or Prime Time Airport Shuttle. Super Shuttle charges $29 per person each way ($18 from Long Beach Airport). They both use vans that can carry 7 passengers and are very efficient. Super Shuttles reservation info is(but I would wait to book with them): https://www.supershuttle.com/WebRez/Welcome.aspx

OMG-so excited it will be on the West Coast.
We shall be there also, doing the happy dance on the segs.
We are headed down in the next few days from Washington to visit the Long Beach Art Museum to see a special exhibit and used the coupons I found on the VistLongBeach site! Thanks.
If anyone is as old as dirt as I am, Long Beach was famous for THE PIKE, my favorite place to flirt with sailors when I was in high school. Anybody else out there that used to go to the Pike Amusement Park? My sister and I would tell my folks we were going to Bob's Big Boy in Pasadena but really we would zoom 50 miles down to the Pike, goof around, and then race the 50 miles home again.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.

So far it looks like I will be coming too. Ofcourse I have to wait until the final details are given. So far it looks like I should be able to fly with my frequent flyer miles, so that will save me some bucks for renting a segway.
How is the segway rental going to be arranged, centrally by Seg America or do we have to arrange this by our self? What are the prices for renting a segway?
Kind regards,

Rental rates for the weekend will be no more than $275 for the weekend and we will try to get an even lower number. With four businesses in the rental business within close proximity, there should not be any shortage of machines. However, like all issues from the number of hotel rooms to the size of the "banquet room" (let alone the final number of meals needed), we hope that the community can commit early rather than all try to make last minute reservations.

If this is any indication (I'm at thr Fairplex at present for the FMCA meeting), I wonder about sunny southern CA.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue across the valleys and mountains until sunset...with a few storms possibly drifting into the Antelope Valley. At 320 PM...Doppler radar showed increasing shower activity with isolated thunderstorm activity extending from the Santa Clarita valley southeastward across the Front Range of the San Gabriel Mountains. The strongest storm was located along Highway 39 in the San Gabriel Mountains...around 10 miles north of Azusa. Any storms that do develop will be capable of producing brief heavy rain or snow...gusty winds...and small hail. A Snow Advisory remains in effect for the mountains above 4000 feet.

Thanks for the info on an RV resort. It would be great if the hotel/convention center would allow us to park in their lot. We have our own generator, so it certainly would be convenient.
We would vote for August.....makes it easier for anyone involved with schools or anyone having kids that are in school. Our household has 3, 1 kid & both parents, in college so September is tough. Just my thoughts....

Going to a fesT is a great way to learn and even better way to meet others who enjoy the "Joys of Gliding" and I caould think of fewer things that I'd rather do.
As a full time RV'er, location. location. location does not pertain only to real estate but you have to add timing as a determinate factor. If the event was being held next week, I'd be there with bells on simply because I'm within 30 miles but my plans this summer are to head north along the coast. A time will come to turn ariund and head south and at present I want to be in Albuquerque Oct. 7-15 for the balloon festival. Late Sept. is doable if I altered my plans unless the airlines change their tune on the LIon batteries.
Today and the next few - Pomona. Where next???
Bob.

BTW - Some type of recognition will go to all non-USA attendees. How many countries will be represented? Will Lewis from Hong Kong make it? Anyone from Russia?
I'm also told that the So Calif stores will be notifying all of their customers. While no one condones drinking and gliding, there are major laws against drinking and driving. Plus traffic is what it is here, so when we start booking hotel rooms, many will go to locals not wanting to drive home. Please book early so that you are guaranteed a room. Once we have signed contracts with the hotel, more info will be forth coming look to www.SEGAmerica.org first.
www.Segwayfest.com is run by another group (a manufacturer that we all know) and their web person is not on staff full time at the moment, so it will take some time to up date that.
We are working on an airfare discount too for those flying in.

Will, I have to hand it to you and all of those involved... you are attacking this event from all possible angles. It can't help but be a success... I do hope you can attend and we can rub elbows there, as well as before then... when and if you stop in Indy before then!
Looking forward to it.

Sal, thanks for your support. Even though this event will be on the west coast, it will be a great one to attend for every glider.
Right now we are trying to find all the holes and fill them before we make the announcment about everything.
And for local SEGs like Indiana, think about hosting a fesT in the future. No question it is a lot of work, but when you get to share your home town with other gliders, it makes it all worth while. Ask any of the DC SEG members who were on the DC fesT team, they all had a great time with folks from all over the globe.
And it's not "if" it's WHEN on the trip to indy!

Added the full name of the event and the date to the logo.
It's back on the first page (http://www.segwaychat.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13201) of this thread.
Looks a little busy to me, but perhaps different elements can be used in different situations.
I encourage anyone to make comments about this, but keep in mind that the comments of those who have submitted their own version of a logo will bear greater weight - LOL.
Perhaps a new thread on the subject would be wise to avoid cluttering up this one.

Fred must have given a demo, because my cell rung, and I could hear him in the backround training a young woman on how to glide.

Bystander, Mr Protocol and I spent the morning in Long Beach. The Coast Hotel is great and we visited the Queen Mary, saw the Aquarium and glided through only a portion of the area. The Long Beach Gran Prix is in two weeks and they are getting the "race track" (streets by the Bay) ready for the race. There is an extremely wide bike path that crosses the bridge and the whole area is a glider's delight.
See you in Long Beach October 13th to 15th. BTW the hotel has limited rooms available prior to arrival Friday and lots of rooms available immediately post Fest for those that want to make the Coast their base for an extended vacation.

Wineries, Redwood Forests, Shopping, Golf, Scenery...
Some excellent side trips might be, Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite Park, Death Valley, Hollywood/Beverly Hills, Mexico..

That would be a great idea to fit a vacation around SegwayfesT 2006.
Or, for those with a little less time, and not that they need the plug (or maybe they do!), there's an amusement/theme park here called "California Adventure" (right next to Disneyland and operated by Disney). It has a little of everything from all over California.

Good point.
Many of us are puzzled by the mouse's seemingly schizophrenic attitude toward Segways. They offer HT tours of the Florida park before opening, have (or have had) HTs on display in the innoventions exhibit, and have cast members using them.
Yet they prohibit customers from using them, even as wheelchair substitutes.
Perhaps they will come around eventually, if enough awareness is raised. Perhaps they are already a lost cause.
I didn't mean to disturb DRAFT members with the post, just provide some information. I should have mentioned that it would be futile to attempt to bring one's HT into the park due to their current policy.

Shot down again.
I was gearing toward Aug. and then planning my route to NM after the fest. I have reservations in ABQ for the Balloon Festival - 800 miles, four days of driving and 200 gallons of diesel away (RT) because I was going to winter in southern NM. If you do the math, I probably won't make it unless I decide to go to Mexico for next winter.
Playing by ear now - darn.

The Coast Hotel is now accepting room reservations! Garden View rooms are $124 and Harbor View rooms are $144. Call (800) 663-1144 and mention SegwayFest for Oct 13th and 14th. I expect that we will run out of rooms thus it would be well worth your time to book early, preferably now.
If you have any problems booking a room, please e-mail me and I will do what I can do to assist. Their web site is http://www.coasthotels.com/home/sites/longbeach/ but you need to call them or e-mail them to get the SegwayFest reduced rates.

Hi everyone,
I just booked the hotel via the live agent, you need to have a lot of patience, it's quit busy there.
The special segway block of rooms is already sold out apperantly
But anyway, I got a room for a bit more expensive rate, arival: 11th of october, getting used to the weather and the jet-lag at the 12th, departure at the 16th.
Now I need some prices of local rental companies for renting me the segway during the event. If you rent segways, please feel free to send me an e-mail with the price, the one with the best price will get me as their customer :D

I also ran into problems, they only had the more expensive rooms available at segfest rates, also if you are coming in BEFORE the rest you pay regular rates. and.. rooms seem to be scarce.
OK I AM BOOKED!

Dialing up the 800 number they seem to have issues and do not show the block availalbe at our rates of $124 & $144
I called the hotel directly and 562.435.7676 and got a bay view room with 2 beds for the $144
So now I am set.
If any of you had problems with getting the rate, call the hotel directly not the main 800reservation line.

The hotel contract calls for up to two days post and 2 days prior based on availablity. Pre fesT may be an issue due to a big confrence at the hotel, post fesT should be no problem.
So call the hotel directly - eliminate that call center, who seem to know nothing, and make sure your reservation is set with fesT rates.
Any issues like that, make sure you let Fred know about them, quickly so that he can follow up with the hotel.

You should be able to contact the 800 number or use the internet live agent for our overseas friends. Florin, please e-mail all of your particulars and it will be straightened out. Also, you should be able to get the same rate for 2 days before and 2 days after the event. Is there a group rate at the Golden Shore RV Park? I know there are 2 of us from Oregon in motorhomes and assume there will be a few more.
Would it be appropriate for me to try to work something out?
Was something worked out with the hotel for motorhomes to "boondock"? That would also work for us since we can get along without hook-ups.

Dandi - please feel free to see if you can get a good rate for motor homes, dealing with our hotel will give me enough gray hair!
I've gotten e-mails from those that have gotten our great rates and yet I see that some have not gotten the good rates. E-mail me if the Coast won't give you either a $124 or $144 per night room or if you are having difficulty booking a king sized bed. I just got off the phone with my contact person and he stated that there is a computer interface problem.
I do expect that we will sell out our block of rooms and those that wait until the last minute could pay closer to $200 a night or worse.

I would always prefer a non-stop flight or one stop flight which should be possible going into LAX. The biggest advantage of Long Beach airport is that Jet Blue flies there with non-stop service from Washington DC and New York and Jet Blue has some great fares. LAX is only 20 minutes further from the hotel by car. Super Shuttle is a van service that will typically take 6 passengers to a specific area. Super Shuttle's cost is $39 from LAX to the Coast Hotel. They have large cargo areas so bringing your Seg along shouldn't be a problem.
Bystander's point is well taken. E-mail me your thoughts.

I have talked with a number of gliders, and have heard some stories of over priced room quotes, and that the hotel is full for our group.

So if you have had problems, call the hotel directly.
And let Fred know about them.
This is going to be great fesT.
And if you are traveling, you MAY want to come in a day or two early for something special! Nothing has been announced yet, but word has it on the street that it will be worth coming in early for!
The announcement of the United / United Express / Ted / Luftansa (sp) airline discountl is about to come out. and yes it will cover all the southern california airports.... from 2 to 15% discount

Jonathan,
That certainly has been one of my concerns. Southern California is very fortunate to have so many Segway stores that rent machines for those willing to glide a non-pimped Seg.
Karl and you won't be caught dead on a plain jane machine.
I am currently trying to get all of the correct rules and have them posted on our SegwayFest web site when it is ready to be up and running. Currently I am assured that we can have our web page up and running by the third week of October. (Just a joke!)
As I understand the rules, the lithiums need to be attached to your Segway and sent ground. Suggested carriers are BAX and DHL. If we can work out some type of group shipping rates, the community will hear it loud and clear. Stay tuned.

I hope that no too many 'special activities' will happen any more than one day prior to SegwayFest. It costs a lot more to come several days early, although many will arrive on Thursday.
Early activities should be posted as soon as possible so folks can still plan ahead and not miss anything...
Tom is right, many will be coming in on Thursday.
I for one am. Just booked a room at the hotel! I can't wait!
Fred, remember, I have two (maybe just one) Segways I'll need for the duration... LOL (just wanted to remind the powers that be of my request which was made early on for rentals for the event)

I found out today that we hadn't created a large enough block of rooms for those arriving on Thursday or earlier. If someone desired to book coming in Thursday, they were told that the event was sold out which it isn't. Room sales have been very brisk when you consider that we aren't fully advertising the event yet. We have virtually half of our initial block of rooms accounted for (38 out of 80 rooms). We can book more rooms but as some here know, there was a mess in the past when too many rooms were commited for and the organizers are financially guaranteeing the use of the rooms.
Please continue to keep me informed of any issues that you are having with room bookings.

For the RVers that intend to attend, Golden Shore is a good park but being October you had best come in with full LP as the service here is erratic from what the office told me. The guy evidently comes when he feels like it. Electric service was upgraded this week.
The Pike is a half mile from the gate, the Coast Hotel is 1.2 miles and the Queen Mary is 1.73 to the front entrance to the hotel.
If you have any other questions, drop me a line as I may miss a post. As I spend more time here I can elaborate more on Long Beach from a visitor's standpoint.
