View Full Version : Annoying Security Guards

I am the proud ownwer of a new i180 (purchased new from Segway of Annapolis). Right away I took a spin aroud the perimeter of a local shopping mall late in the evening. Halfway around the perimeter, I was stopped by mall security whom told me that I was not allowed to ride my "skateboard" (chuckle from me) at the mall. I stated that I was not on a "skateboard" and that my segway was perfectly legal. His reponse was that I was on private property blah blah blah and that I could only ride on the perimeter road (hwy). B
Being a new rider, and not wanting to cause problems, I obliged; however I was very annoyed with having to ride my new segway on a highway (45 mph limit) because of a lame security guard.
Has anyone else had this experience, and if so, how do you handle them? Naturally, I want to be in compliance with local ordinances etc; however ignorance from people in authority can be a pain.

Ostinsfriend,
The guard is right, you were on private property and, therefore, they had the right to ask you to leave, much as they have the right to have cars towed, etc.
The best thing you can do is visit the mall management and tell them you will be visiting the mall on your Segway and that you don't want to encounter the same problems you had today. Of course, they will likely tell you that you can't ride it IN the mall but you should be able to get permission to ride outside.

Got to love the enthusiasm of a NEW Glider....
Since he is hanging out in our neck of the woods, we got him on the DCSEG site. (everyone who vists DC with their Segway HT is welcome as a DCSEG member!) That is how I have met a number of great folks on this site - as well as all of you who came to DC for fesT last September....
I am looking out the window this evening at one heck of a rain storm here in Washington DC, hopefully the dawn will bring a bright sunny day, then maybe we can get this glider out of his hideaway and get him out gliding with some other folks.... Nothing like your first glide with a couple of other crazy folks on Segways!

Lame.
Were they cool about it or were they jealous of our seg or just like to hassle people in the middle of the night for no good reason? Shouldn’t they be looking for real trouble? Were you hotroding it like some skateboarders do outside malls?
Out here in Hollyweird I've never had a problem at a mall.
Did much of my holiday shopping on my Seg carefully gliding throughout the mall with no hassles (inside and out).
Go west young man! Folks out here seem to be more progressive. ;)
Peace.

I go into Malls, stores, banks, supermarkets and and you name it, with no problems. I carry the Seg on the back of my car or motorhome a lot of the time so it is always "at the ready". My only problem aftger 2 1/2 years was a couple months ago at a Simon operated Mall where I was sort of EJECTED. Apparently that is the policy with all Simon Malls nationwide so far. My policy has always been to just ride in like I owned the place......ride slowly and carefully at all times and I get nothing but Positive comments from managers and security personnel.
