If there was ever a need for a Segway, this was it. Note portions of the the path at the bottom of the image. This was one steep climb. That's Roosevelt Lake in the background.
According to the ranger that snapped at least 3 shots of me (the ones I saw) I was the first one on a Segway at that particular park. The rangers tested these at the Grand Canyon years ago and the Park Service decided against them. This ranger was among the testing force. I think he may try again.

Bob.

To repeat what others have said requires education; to appropriately challenge what others have said, requires brains.

One would think with the issues of environmental concerns, that the Segway would be of great use there. And now with the XT on the market, it would be perfect for such terrains.

Did the ranger say why the department decided against them, or what the concensus was among those that tried them?

If memory serves, it was the old battery range issue. The drain in some circumstances was too great to give them a warm fuzzy feeling that they could get back to where they started from. Similar issues with the Posties (both U.S. and Canada) Unfortunately I don't think any of them have taken a serious look since the lithiums became available. As the British would say..."Pity"
