EDIT: PLEASE USE THE FOLLOWING SITE FROM NOW ON: Florin was gracious enough to set up a professional wiki!

http://www.florin-webdesign.nl/segwaywiki

All that is stated below is no longer valid. Thanks
*****

First off, I'm not a professional and it shows... but I thought I'd take the initiative to set up a user editable (public) wiki/database of sorts where we can all add information about our parts of the US/World.

http://www.protopage.com/segfriendly

PLEASE READ THE RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY... It's easy, but take your time and keep the look and consistency going.

This uses protopage.

(Safari is not supported as of yet)

-Sal

P.S. If you have improvements which won't ruin the integrety of the information and usability have at it. I started it, but now it's in your hands. I thought it would be useful

I don't know if there's a way to keep this topic on top so it won't get buried when new posts arrive.

I think it would be a great help to many who called for an input device such as this to catalog Segway Friendly places.

Hi Sal,

I took a look at the wiki, but I'm lost. It says to look at Indiana as an example, but when I click on indiana nothing happens, even after I logged on I still can't click on indiana.

I'm using internet explorer, I assume that your wiki supports IE.

Personally I find the current layout a bit chaotic, everywhere you have little windows, it's confusing for me where to start navigating.

Personally I have good experiences with MediaWiki (http://www.mediawiki.org) as a user, that one is quit user friendly and self explaining.

Kind regards,

Check the contents. The outline of how the page is set up is quite clear. Indiana is not a link, but states to go to page 6, like in a book.

Sal,

UAE posted, will be adding Egypt later this month as well as Morocco.

I also made some cosmetic changes to the page....in an effort to make it more readable. If you don't like tell me and I'll go back and change it back.

OK, now it makes sense. Isn't it possible to make the names clickable.

I also noticed that you cleaned things a bit up, it looks better now.

I think I can get MediaWiki up and running on my website, if you want I can give it a try. Just take a look at WikiPedia and see if you like the way it works. If you like it, then let me know and I will give it a try to get it up-and-running on my website. If it's OK for Frank/Pam I can even give it a try to give it the same look as the current SC website has. Then it can become a part of this website.

Personally I would like to see the wiki broader, not just seg-friendly info, but also summaries/conclusions of things which has been discussed at this website, like for example a segway key making tutorial for people who are new to key making.

DCSEG is building its website these days, and this is the perfect kind of content for SEG sites.

Steve:

Thanks, it looks great!!! Thanks for putting the effort in to improve it, yes, now it's a lot more readable.

That was the first time I had used Protopage, so it was a hoot to work on something new for about an hour. LOL

Florin:

If I had a PC, and knew anything about the back-end wiki apps, I'd be head first onto the wiki style of information management. I prefer wikipedia over protopage any day because it's established (whereas AJAX;protopage is new), and because editing on wikis is much more back end web, rather than using JAVA/AJAX which depend on browser connections, etc.

So if there's a way for you to get the already posted information fro the current segfriendly site onto a wiki style database up and running on your site, and when that's done, tell me and I'll put a referrer link on to the ptotopage site, so people can remember a simple web address, I'm all for it!

I love this community!

It's brand independant, it works on Windows, Linux, Mac, etc. Although you need to have several things installed before you get started. Give me a few days and I will come back with the results.

No problem to explain, but first check if your webspace includes PHP and MySQL. If it does, then let me know and I will make a little tutorial on the Wiki. You're probably not the only one who's interrested in it.

Let me jump in and say that I'd like to encourage everyone to jump onto Florin's Wiki and populate the "Segway-friendly" section. It's a very valuable resource, if you're thinking you might like to haul your Segway along on vacation to some other locale. Segways, for example, are quite welcome and quite handy around Santa Monica/Venice in Southern California, and I've put in a big fat entry saying so, together with a few local caveats.

where do you get segways the cheapest
?

pam
02-26-2006, 10:39 PM
The cheapest is usually a scam. Particularly on ebay. If you want a Segway, you need to really do a lot of research. Sometimes dealers will have used HTs that are less expensive than new ones. If you choose to go the ebay route, then there are several questions to ask - can you pick it up and pay at the time of pick up is usually a good way to separate the wheat from the chaff.

From the DC SEG Yahoo Chat Site - Posted by jlespinal

This week, I found a Segway friendly restaurant in Arlington last
week. I met a friend there for lunch and when I arrived I asked if I
could bring my Segway in with me. The receptionist asked the boss and
he said sure. I parked it up against to wall next to our table and
enjoyed some excellent Cheese and Onion Enchiladas for $7.95. I don't
know if they would let a bunch of Segways, inside but 2 or 3 would
probably be OK.

If you are in the area, support this Segway Friendly Restaurant even
if you don't come by Segway

The place is called:

El Paso Café 4235 N Pershing Dr, Arlington, VA 22203
Telephone (703) 243-9811

Pershing Drive is just North of Arlington Blvd (HW 50) and the
restaurant is just west of Glebe Road.

I noticed that there is quit a lot of SPAM on the WIKI. I will have to check if there is a way to block this.

Otherwise we might have to find a way to incorperate a WIKI into the vbulletin system that we have here at Segwaychat.

florin
06-03-2006, 06:22 AM
I checked all the pages, they are now all clear from SPAM.

Somehow they like to register their self but don't authenticate their user account which makes the wiki remove the SPAM (as far as I can see, I'm not an WIKI expert )

If you find any spam on the wiki, please let me know by sending me an e-mail. Then I can see what I can do to further block it.

I was looking to add information on New Hampshire, and I wanted to format it correctly. When I went to the help page, there were ads for all the popular drugs.
It would be a great feature if there is a way to use the vBulletin userbase as the userbase for the wiki.

pam
12-02-2006, 09:02 PM
I'm not sure they'd want to use our userbase - maybe our active members (i.e. has posted x number of posts), if it could be done that way. I spend a great deal of my time trying to weed out spammers - we must get hit with 10-20 a day trying to set up accounts. I delete all the really obvious ones (all the ones with s*e*x*X*X in their user names:p) but the only other option I have is to approve everyone I'm not sure up and put them all on moderation until I see what kinds of posts they post. I've just about got 3 DNS names figured out as the main problems. But, to pull this back to the thread, I would suggest that IF we can use the vBulletin database, it be only people who have posted x number of posts.

I'm thinking of adding something like this to my campaign website so that stores, malls, attractions, etc., can be listed. I'm thinking of going one step further and inviting such places to formally accept a position of Segway friendliness:-

Gold - you can glide in-store with charging available
Silver - you're welcome to push your seg around, charging available
Bronze - you can push your seg around the store.
(something along these lines)

Does it sound feasible to you guys? Is it something I can integrate into the Wiki?

kitto
12-22-2006, 05:09 AM
Funny, I had a similar idea recently and set up my wiki, too. It would be great to be able to know, ahead of time, how Segway friendly a place might be.

I just discovered this forum recently, even after owning a couple Segs for the past few years.

My segway pages (open wiki) are here: http://www.metakitto.com/doku.php?id=segway:segway, along with the smallest beginnings of a list of cities, private property, etc.

This is not intended to take away from anybody else's efforts... just getting the information out there anywhere and in any form is great, so we can search for it when we need it.

jgbackes
06-21-2007, 09:28 PM
I thought it would be easier if each city had its own page. I hope this doesn't mess anybody up.

Please check the California area for details
