My midnight blue i170 (s/n 042281010473) segway was stolen from a gated apartment complex garage near Santa Monica & Sepulvida in Los Angeles. It was purchased a year and a half ago from Segway of Chicago. They did not get the keys.

Michael,
I am in LA near Sunset and Fairfax but get all around town (by car and Seg) so I want to definitely look out for it...
Which model is it? i167, i170 or a P? If an i180, which color? Any possible description on what the "perpooptrator" looks like?
Also important -- any added gear attached, such as a light, cargo cases on the sides or bag in the front? Spinners? Unusual markings or colors?
As soon as you get the serial, let us know.
Thanks and good luck on a quick recovery.

Most importantly, did they get the keys? If not then we won't see them out and about, but you can bet the local dealers will probably get some key inquiries. Notify the local dealers of the serial number if they didn't get the keys.
Hope we find it!

Dealers should always SAY that they can make replacement keys to induce the machine be brought into their store.
Michael, so sorry for your agravation, was it insured? Is it a 170 or a 167? At least if it was insured, you might be able to get a new machine with lithium ions.
My Progressive policy costs $150 per year and covers theft as well as $250,000 of liability coverage. That makes it easy for me to give demos.
I hope you not only recover your machine but the perp gets caught.

It's an i167, midnight blue. The only thing on it is the little pouch that came with it. They did not get the keys. I called segway of chicago to get the s/n, but was told they couldn't get the s/n to me until Tuesday...
As for the "perpooptrator"...they are prabably average height, average build, and too stupid to know they have a 50 lbs. paper weight.
I will post the s/n when segway of chicago gets it to me.
Mgemmons,
Do you mean a i170 Midnight Blue? And unfortunately, they will have an 83lb paperweight.

Tom,
Should he ask the person that stole it to look and call him with the number? :)

Now thats a good reminder to all Seg Owners ...Tip your Seg forward and write down that serial Number..And keep it in a good place..Like your important papers box.(Safe Deposit Box??).Another thing I learned and I do it with My Cars and other items ..In a very in inconspicuous place like in the CS I place my Business Card//Taped inside..In Autos under the Dash somewhere..In case it is stolen and found ..I have a positive reason that it is mine ..And can prove it to any law inforcement //By just saying look in that spot and what will they find ???

You are correct...it's an i170. I modified the topic header to include the serial number, which is 042281010473.

In fact, page 3 of Segway reference manual provided a space to put down the S/N and Key code (i.e., the bar code attached to one of your red keys).

Is that mean with the key code...then the one who stole the segway can copy the key??

The manual stated that it requires both S/N and key code to get a replacement key.
However, from the message in the forum, dealers required customer to provide S/N only to order a replacement key. Is that true?

If you wish to order a replacement key from the dealer, you must have your original keys available or proof of ownership. Before any keys are made, I check with INC to make sure that the machine is registered to the person that is requesting the keys and all the information lines up.

Austin..This would put me in a Bind to get an extra set of Keys for my P133...I bought it from a Member or a Former member as since he sold his Segs he does not post any longer...Namely "SMOOTHER" (John Out) he never sent me a written Bill of Sale...And I'm sure that he was not the original owner ...As I have searched the Archives of his Post and he memtions he's second owner. Now if I remember right he sold two Segs on Ebay ..So now am I thrid or second owner of the P133?? I don;t know! Just a couple of weeks ago I sent him an Email asking for a Bill of Sale but he has not answerwed..I don't even have the Key Code and only one red key, the yellow and Black one..Always a Delemma we me..my i167 I also bought on ebay from and another member "DEJAPOSTER" .."Andrew Southern" But he gave me a Bill of Sale and I have since gotten extra keys from INC.

We can make copies of keys in house, so we would be able to take any original key and duplicate it for you. With one key, we can make custom keys with different speeds, turning rates and depending on software, timeouts. There might be a dealer around you that could have this copy option also.
As far as the registered owners to a Segway, ALWAYS make sure that you obtain proof of purchase on any machine and submit it to INC as soon as possible. It elminates a lot of questions when you have your machine correctly registered.
