View Full Version : Charging Port Rubber Cover

I am trying to find a "loose, off the SEG" flexible rubber charging port cover flap for a project. If you have had your original flap replaced for whatever reason - torn off, wouldn't stay in place - I need one Off the SEGWAY to make a replacement which will stay in place!

I called SEGWAY tech services to see about getting my rubber cover replaces by an authorized dealer and was tols the the new one is the same as the original and it probably would not work any better than the one I have now.

Short of making a VELCRO strip which will wrap around the rubber cover and fasten on each side of the CS base it does not look as if the original will ever work right.

I think I have a method of modifying the original outer cover flap and redesigning the part which goes into the hole - secure and water tight!

In order to make the mold for my replacement, I need a real one which has the proper size and contours for a casting. The real trick will be on the inside surface where the "ribs" are. That will be "re-engineered" with a plug that fits tightly, will stay in place and keep moisture out.

I have looked at ways to get an impression of the original cover flap while it is still on my machine but the liklihood of getting a non-distorted, 3-D replica for the next step of my redesign is not good.

If you can arrange to get me the cover part from a replaced cover I can make a better casting for a mold that will look and fit like the original was supposed to do in the first place.

In return, I will send you a replacement when I get through with the molding and casting process.

Wallace, while you are in the designing mood.....design both a charging cord receptacle and a key port that will be a spring loaded snap down type with a grommet type seal. It does not need to keep out violent cloudbursts....just casual raining! Isn't it ironic that Segway could spend millions designing the rig itself and forget these little details!

I had trouble getting the cover to stay in place until I learned to hold the cover by pinching from the sides as I put it back in place. Doing this, it stays with no problem.

Wallace, in case you didn't get my email, send me your mailing address off board and I'll
send you a brand new charge port cover assembly to experiment with

I have to agree with Don above.

My machine is well over 2 years old, and I do not have any problem at all with the port. It took me a few tries to figure out how to squeeze the sides while inserting the cover, but mine rarely ever opens...

My experience with 25 machines is that each charge port cover seals slightly differently. Some very easy and tight, and others not as secure. The new idea sounds interesting. It's fun to see some 'intelligent' modifications to make the HT a little better.

I'd like to see INC. come up with a Spring Loaded cover ..Like the Outdoor electric Outlets have..Remove the charge cord and it would close and seal by itself..

If not a Spring-loaded cover, how about a variation on the "female" counterpart to the inner prongs of the charging port with a rubber "umbrella" portion as in the current cover. One need not have that cover attached to the powerbase at all; instead it will use the "seating" of plugging it in to keep it in place.

Mine is 2 years old and works like new, some people do not know how to close it properly.
