quote:
Nov. 22 - Furman University sophomore Philip Hammond is scooting across North Carolina on his Thanksgiving break.
Hammond is riding about 270 miles on a Segway, a high-tech, battery-powered scooter.

Over the next few days the business administration major plans to stop in 35 cities. Hammond says he wants to raise money for Push America, a North Carolina-based charity that helps people with disabilities.

Hammond says he hopes to give the group a boost as it competes with charities that benefit Gulf Coast hurricane victims.

Hammond says it's important not forget other worthy causes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

What do you think? Do you think he will raise $$?

That's cool. . .

I think he'll raise money, it's definitely a good cause, and will of course garner attention because he is on a Segway to boot.

Grass roots efforts like this only help everyone in concerned, and also sheds a positive light to the Segway. . .

On a different but slightly tangential note, an acquaintence and I were in NYC last year (after the 10MPH folks completed their journey). We were both on our Segways, with our laptops in hand standing on a streetcorner in Chelsea looking for free WiFi (save the moral question for another time), when we were approached by several people asking if we were the ones who glided cross-country.

I wonder of similar things will happen if more and more people begin to use the Segway to raise money for different issues? Maybe something of a technosocial movement tool?

Oh well, enough of my ramblings.
