Transport Department

The Segway Human Transporter has been deemed unsuitable for road use by the Transport Department.

The electric scooter fails to comply with Road Traffic (Construction & Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations, so the department cannot register or license the vehicle.

It cannot be used on highways, thoroughfares, streets, lanes, alleys, courts, squares, car parks, passages, paths, ways and places to which the public has access, either public or private.

People should know the permitted areas for using the vehicle before purchasing one, to avoid becoming subject to prosecution or legal liability. Importers and retailers are also urged to state that the vehicle is not legally permitted for road use in Hong Kong.

A majority of my customers are tourists from Hong Kong.
I often ask if they could use a Segway back home.
Most reply that it's "too crowded".

So what are the 'permitted' areas? Doesn't seem like there's much left.

I haven't been in HK since '63 and even then it would have been a nightmare to blide over there. It's even dangerous to walk. I almost got hit by a taxi when I stepped off a curb. This dumb round eye looked the wrong way for traffic.

How exactly does the Segway fail to comply with?

____

It's small, economical, noiseless, pollution free... complies with everything I would want in an urban transportation device...

Seriously though, am I missing something?

It looks like it does not meet criteria for and therefore can not be licensed as a vehicle. Seems they missed the point of IT. IT is a pedestrian, not a vehicle.

I think I should say something as i am living here in HONGKONG.
Yes, the govt here banned segway since 2003, they have considered it as motorised vehicle and it cannot comply with the regualtion with that definition...

The govt announced that statement again due to an irresponisble dealer from taiwan.
The d-media from tw few weeks before suddenly show up the segways in the most crowded area in Hong Kong, MONGKOK. They may try to promote how funny the segway is with two models standing on the segways.

That;s why i said they are irresponsible
1. they knew it is illegal, and they bring it to the most densely place(finally a police come to stop them)
2. they have no intention to change the law( I called them and they just sell me the segway, when i ask "will your company try to pursuade the govt for some legislation amendment?", they just said pls use it in your private places etc...no hope for that....)
3. they charge the price at an totally unresonable price tag. ( can u imagine they sell it at us$7435...............and only for an i170 model....) They just want to make money from those early adopters whose know nothing about 180...XT...GT.....Their answer to me that the difference from I180 and I170 is just the colour.....GODSSSSSS

I have written a letter to confirm their dearlership from Segway Inc and has no reply for weeks....are they too busy?
If the d-media from tw is not the official dealer in Hong Kong and doing those irresponisble promotion and selling at this crazy price(who knows the warranty valid or not).......I think segway INC should stop them !!
pls save the HK segway user....send a dealer who will talk with our govt instead of making money...................
this is my sincere hope!!!
I love Segway!!

I supposed Hong Kong-based Wow Wee is the first company that bought the rights to use Segway "Smart-motion Technology". Perhaps they should have sufficient material to convince HK government in some ways.

Segway survived on mainland china? I hope so.

Is that mean they are the dealer in HongKong too??
They claimed that they sold 10plus units to china too....so are they the dealer of China market too??
I just have no idea about their warranty coverage.....from d-media taiwan or HK?? and also dun understand why their link www.twsegway.com.tw is dead....

I am not sure about the legislation but the price is probably pretty standard once you factor in customs, duties and taxes for a product that expensive.

Hi Austin....there is totally no tax, duties, tarriff for high technology product in HONGKONG.....HK is a free trading port!!!
If u still think $7435 is resonable for a i170.....then i have nth to say.....cos it explains the warranty itself cost that much for an old model.....
Segway INC, pls sent a dealer work with the govt in HK.....pls
Indeed I am still not sure about the d-media's dealership in HK and China......They claimed they are.....

Mr. Lee,
Thanks for your explaination of how/why Segways were "banned" in Hong Kong. I had read something in the SCMP about that but it didn't have the full story about the irresponsible vendor.

I agree that Central HK and Mongkok wouldn't be very good places to use a Segway -- not during peak hours at least. Besides, public transportation in HK is among the best in the world, so no need to commute on a Segway.

On the other hand, a Segway could be quite useful and enjoyable in the New Territories and Lantau Island. Would be fun take a Seg out there on a weekend...or use it to get around if you lived out there.

Hi Sonorama
sounds like u are so familiar with Hongkong~~
yes, there are great places for gliding~ But the situation now is...the police can sue you.

After the press, radio and newspaper reports.....I just can tell.....everyone here in HK has a first impression that "Segway Is ILLEGAL".
Before that, ppl knew Segway would tell me...."That's what Bush fell from..."

What a mess now......

Hi Skywalker!
Yes I get to Hong Kong every few months or so.

Too bad it's been bad, but, if there is any positive, maybe it has increased people's knowledge of Segway ... and people could buy them to ride in China.

Take care!
