In the same Simon Mall that I got kicked out of, I went into a big book store with an outside entrance. As I went through the detectors it rang an alarm coming IN. I looked over at the clerks to see if they had a tommy gun trained on me, but they were just laughing...they told me to try it again and it did it the second time, but going OUT it did nothing!! It did nothing to my Segway HT however. I checked carefully....

There were posts about Segways in Libraries a while back, setting off detectors, shutting down, etc. Maybe it's the same sort of thing.

It seems these things don't always work the same way. I went into a store that had one, and it put my Seg into a safety shutdown. As I had been warned of this possibility, I had no concerns, I just restarted and kept right on going. The next time I went into the same store, expecting the same thing, it didn't make a sound, or affect my Seg in any way. Strange how one time it shut me down, and the next time it didn't.

It has something to do with the power of the signal, doesn't it? Libraries and bookstores have the power on the transmitters ramped out in order to penetrate the paper of the books, or something like that?

Fear not, for even though I come from the Forbidden City, I surely do not agree with the rules.

The Segway HT Reference Manual (pg 31) says: "Theft detection systems may interfere with Segway HT operation.... These systems may not always be visible. Some theft detection systems have caused the Segway HT (in Balance Mode) to perform a Safety Shutdown." It goes on to give some advice.

I was testing this after the recall back in the day. My HT took a 45 Degree drop and hit about 20 MPH after i was tring to race a RC Car. My Biz Partner is a libraian so i frequent libraries often. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo - Shut down 3out of 5 times. Arroyo Grande Library - 2 out of ten. Like Chris said they are much higher signals on the detectors so they can shoot through those thick books.
Great way to test your saftey shut down feature. College libraries have the highest signal.
