View Full Version : Training - mandatory?

One of the reasons a person might get a Segway is because long distance travel is a hardship. I find it daunting to have to travel to receive hands-on training. So, is training mandatory or an option?

Hi jjstafford --

My understanding from reading the Segway site, and from discussions with the instructor at the training, is that it is mandatory. Until you've done the training, you can't take delivery of your Segway.

Having taken the training, I can see why they've made it mandatory. The Segway is so easy to get used to that it's also easy to underestimate the "confidence-competence gap" that can arise. The training covers how to handle the Segway in most common terrain types and operations, and (very strongly) what not to do. It really is best to initially encounter things like the speed limiter behavior, or the potential behavior of the Segway when going over an object with a round cross-section, etc. in class with a spotter.

(P.S. For those of you scheduling training, make sure you have a bicycle or skateboarding helmet available for the training session, as they are required.)

They have helmets available in Manchester, should you train there. I just called up to find out what kind they use, and the customer service rep went downstairs and looked while I was on hold (is that service, or what?!). Said they had 4 or 5 kinds, but the most common was the ACE SKATE helmet by Protek. I know that Mr. Techno has the Protek Classic Skate.

Was the mandatory training requisite made clear in the original purchase contract?

I got mine through an early adopter affinity program that Segway has with the company I work for. Completing the training before delivery was a clearly laid out requirement in that contract.

From the Amazon Segway "Purchase, Safety, and Ownership Guidelines" entry:

Note: You or the person (over 16 years of age) to whom you have the Segway HT shipped must complete the training course before the Segway company will ship your product.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007EPJ6/ref=dp_seg_cent_6/103-9101281-3615024?v=glance&s=electronics&vi=safety#get

Since I didn't order mine from Amazon, I can't say if this was always on the website, but it does seem to be pretty clearly laid out...

Argh! The EBay statement leaves out the actual locations: the training could announced to be held anywhere, and therefore possibly an unreasinable obstacle to fullfill. I'd say it pretty much invalidates the contract for some people, certainly me. Looks like lawyer time.

jjstafford-

ebay doesn't sell segway hts, if you see one on ebay, it's most likely a person scamming folks.

on -amazon- the place you can buy the ht, it's clearly stated a). training is mandatory and b). where and when it will be.

cheers,
pt

jjstafford,

You are going to spend $5000.00 for a Segway. What is $3 or $400.00 more getting to the training location.
After all the lawyer will probably clip you for a lot more than that and you will not get a plane ride with his charges.

The first I heard of the mandatory traing was in an email from Segway yesterday stating a following email would tell specifics.

so far, everything I have read had the mandatory training written into it. I'm sure in your excitement at purchasing it, your short term memory may have been whacked a little. Go to both the amazon and Segway llc sites and read. You'll see it. I can hardly wait....

mind if my segway and i pass?

They will allow you to bring a friend to training. If you can't drive or don't own a car, perhaps you have a friend who drives, who would be willing to drive you both to the class.

I remember the training requirement from the moment the Segway was offered for sale on Amazon. If it's a legitimate Amazon purchase, training was required.

:) First, I apologize for the poor spelling in my last post. I was working on a tiny laptop and could barely see the screen. And yes, it was Amazon. The _unanticipable_ expense, time to be taken off, and travel difficulties are disturbing. I believe a proper resolution of the contract is in order, but I'll take that up with the company. (I don't have to pay for an attorney. Guess why.)

I see no such agreement to specifics such as training in the Amazon contract, unless it is stated AFTER you pay your deposit, and then it's too late to be part of the agreement. That's not business, folks. That's the Army or somehing.

Perhaps we have taken this about as far as neccessary. The only time I've been required to be at an undeterminable location at an undeterminable date was when I was paid to do so - certainly not something I'd expect as a client. It is all too ambiguous. When there is ambiguity that serves the seller and creates a significant disadvantage for the buyer, then it the seller is not to find gain. No contract. Segway may be trying to break new ground, but this is silly. And I do not travel in the Winter. Game over. Segway can kiss my butt.

Even before I decided to purchase the Segway, I had seen the term of sales at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/feature/-/412888/102-0770587-3252107 -- I also seem to recall having to read that agreement at the time of purchase (but I'm not definitely sure about that).

It clearly states that training would be held in Los Angeles and Manchester at least once per week, and at least once per month in the other cities: Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Phoenix, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Atlanta, New York, Baltimore, and Orlando Fl.

Methinks it couldn't have been clearer than that.

jjstafford, just went to the amazon site and looked it up,...in the Purchase,Safety and Ownership guidelines section of the amazon offer, under two headings-when will i get my segway ht after i place my deposit- & -how will i learn to use the segway ht- at the end of both, it is written. Note: you or the person to whom you have the segway ht shipped must complete the training course before segway will ship you product. each is written slightly differently but say the same thing.. It is very unfortunate for the ms sufferer you would have donated it to (as you stated in you ownership quote, which I also read when you first posted it) that you are so displeased with Segway LLC. Perhaps you can find it in your heart to locate such a person and assign it to them?

mind if my segway and i pass?

In answer to jjstafford's comments:

Would you rather have your state DMV give you a Segway HT driving test and issue you a license? Hmmm...Yearly EPAMD license fees, EPAMD drivers license fees, EPAMD sidewalk tax on Segway purchase price, and an electricity tax to charge the EPAMD?

I'd rather take the free training and let the Segway company help set the state laws that will make the Segway HT enjoyable to own.

Well, you could always wait until July to get your Segway. Then you wouldn't have to travel in the Winter. But regardless, it sounds as though you don't want a Segway, really. So that would be a moot point. (I know that back on Dec 26th you were "still trying to be convinced.")

Surely you've been around the forums long enough to go through this same debate with at least one other member, and we've been discussing the training for aeons onlist, and how you couldn't get your Segway until your training was complete. I can't imagine that you thought it was just something others had to do and not yourself. But if you've missed all that conversation onlist, I can see how you might have overlooked the training requirements on both the Segway and Amazon sites. Some people just don't see what they don't want to see <G>.

Touch base with Segway, I'm sure they have their legal eagles involved on their side for just such clients as you. If it's truly a case where they cannot hold you to the contract, then they won't. I've found them to be very upfront with everything in my dealing with them. What I'm pretty sure they *won't* do is provide you with one without any training, regardless.

There is nothing that says the purchaser has to travel in the winter in order to take the training.

When I was on the Amazon.com and Segway LLC web sites on November 18, 2002 deciding whether to lay down the non-refundable $500 deposit on a $5000 purchase, I read eveything there was to read in terms of the purchase contract, my rights and obligations, and Segway's rights and obligations and other important and legal stuff. I beleive that doing anything less than this would have been careless and foolish on my part.

It is all spelled out quite clearly in the information that was readily at the time of purchase and is still available now. I believe that the purchaser has 3-4 months after Segway contacts you to finalize the transaction before you have to finalize the transaction.

Is this guy serious or is this a joke? If he is serious he should not only get a lawyer but also see. Sorry but I think this is a waste of our time. Excuse me while I get on with my Glide.

The terms and conditions of the Amazon.com sale have not changed since we launched the sale. There are terms and conditions related to any purchase you make and certainly one that is this expensive, I would think folks would take a few minutes to read either the legal document or the FAQs (where it is also spelled out).

I noticed that comment too, I assume that jjstafford was trying to tell us that he is a lawyer. If that is true, then he is asking for trouble!. Lawyers know that you must read the contract before filing a grievance!

Thinking of lawyers out to get Segway, I notice that www.sue-it.com is no longer out there.

At least you don't have a 6 hour flight to the mainland to attend training class. Can I come with my slippas or do I need to go buy a pair of shoes ?

Aloha :-)
