View Full Version : Anyone heard about a proposed ban in Chicago?

When I was in Chicago this past weekend for my niece's birthday, I mentioned getting a Segway to one of the other party guests. She said, "Aren't they trying to ban them in Chicago?" She didn't have anymore details than that, but she seemed pretty convinced that "someone" was attempting to get them banned. Given that Daley seems to like them, it seemed unlikely, but...

Anyone else heard this rumor? Any truth to it?

disturbed in Seattle,

I'm glad the GlideMaster's on the case!

Segwayers in Chi-town can sleep well tonight!

Unlike San Francisco, Chicago is too progressive to ban the Segway HT. (This statement was followed by a knocking sound on a wood table)

If they were smart they would ban them. Chicago streets, unlike your roomy Seattle vistas, are very crowded already. There is absolutely no room for a vehicle like this to be clogging up the rush hour run-around. Besides, don't you think, as the second fattest city in the country, we could do with some more plain walking?

When you say "we could do with some more plain walking," are you talking about yourself? Are you fat? How much do you weigh? Are you too fat to ride a Segway? Do you plan to give up your use of motorized vehicles and walk instead?

I myself am not fat, and so I plan to use a Segway. In fact, I could stand to gain a little weight, which I hope to do while riding my Segway and eating a healthy meatless hamburger. (I'm a Californian!) Thank you for your concern after my health. Californians, by their very nature, are more healthy than most Americans.

I can understand why Chicago is the second fattest city in the country, It's because of your yummy Chicago-style hotdogs and your famous Chicago pizza. The second fattest, that's why it's called the Second City, right?

How fat are you again? I can understand why you're fat. Chicago people need to be fat because it insulates them from the cold air coming from that big lake. What's it called again? I can't remember which lake, but you know which one I mean, the big one.

Did I mention that polar bears are fat? It's because of the cold. Not because of hotdogs or Segways.

Anyway, Boner, I hope you lose some weight. I'm really worried about your heart, especially at your age. It's not such a good thing to be fat and bald like you. And with no Segway to help you kill the time between polska kilbasas.

Ever have those? They're good. But sadly, they have made you fat.

Oh by the way - "kottontop" means white hair, not bald. Just so's you know.

I rode my Segway HT down Michigan Avenue this morning. The temperature was 9 degrees, the sidewalks were not too crowded and a whole bunch of people had nice things to say. That's Chicago for ya! Oh, there was one police officer who flagged me down. He just wanted to know how much it cost and to tell me how great it was. Later, I had a Chicago-style hotdog with everything on it at the Vienna factory store on Damen. My Segway can handle it!

I think the Chi connection is from a very OLD notion. There seems to be some speculation that Chi would ban it. Or it may be an inference from the idea that they have not specifically endorsed it. From an article on SF ban:

"Illinois passed a measure allowing Segways in towns that specifically pass ordinances permitting them. Most, including Chicago, have not done so."

Does this mean a new principle for the universe? Negative Momentum. Meaning negative ideas have more momentum than they have any right to.

Again, I've heard absolutely no talk of a ban in Chicago. I live in downtown Chicago. I read the papers every day. I watch TV news. I listen to the radio. Nothing.

But we'll be the first to let you know! :)
