I am going to buy a Segway in the spring. Is there anything major that I should or should not do with it? Or anything that I should know before I buy it?

Thanks,
Kasey

Why wait?

The only major thing is, if you wait, you will miss several months of having fun!

Buying New, buy from a dealer that you like and will have a relationship with. If you are buying for low price alone, you will miss out on alot..

Plus right now with every NEW unit sold, along with it comes a SEG America membership.... And the benefits that go with that.

Buying used, see the unit, find out if it has orginal batteries, that may need to be replaced, find out what software it is up on... Make sure it has not been beat, or used as a daily rental, I think we need SEGFAX now that there are so many units coming up on the market..

But I live in Vermont with three feet of snow. There is no way I can ride it in the winter here, except for inside. What is a SEG America membership? How long will it come with a new Segway?

Thanks,
Kasey

Vermont, then you need Extra Traction Tires. Or maybe even an XT... Your in a college town aren't you? So there should be plenty of places all year that you would walk, so there should be plenty of places to glide!!! If you can walk, you can glide!

Heck Segways are made in New Hampshire... I don't think in Bedford they put the HT's in the closet from October to April.. You may not be able to glide every day, but you will want to glide when ever you can. And there is nothing more fun than gliding in the powder just after a snow storm. HT tracks all over the place!

Contact Brian at Segway of Cleveland.. brian@gosegway.net <brian@gosegway.net> His dealership is offering some tremedous values on Segways right now... Even with shipping, you will do well. See his posts on this forum! - He just upped his discount coupon and extended it for a few more days...

On a SEG America membership with each Segway, that is good for a limited time, and we are not sure if LLC will extend it. Right now a free membership comes with every unit sold.

SEG America membership will offer you access and information about your Segway, that you can only get by sharing with other Segway owners, and SEG America members.

Don't wait, fall gliding is some of the best of the year!

There are lots of ways to compensate for the snow...

Check out the thread "How cold can you go" from back in January.

I use my studded snow tires that I got from Zorba9 and they work great in fresh snow. ( I would suspect that 3 feet of snow is too much, but how often are you really in 3 feet on walkways and sidewalks? )

In this photo, and others on that thread, I was towing my niece and son on their sleds. If I could haul that load, you surely can glide...

Life is fun. reach for the brass ring on each go round... do not wait for a better opportunity. (Get some older person to explain the brass ring reference...)

But I thought I read that you are not supposed to ride a Segway when it is less than 14 degrees F. But that does look fun.

I'm sure I wasn't supposed to skydive in that weather either... I did. By the way, 3 feet of snow in Maine makes for great looking landings... You should see the rooster tails that come from a 60 mph slide thru the fresh snow...

Anyway, as far a gliding in the cold, I am sure that there are precautions you should take, but that is not the same as not doing it. Any manufacturer will give an operable range for their device, then the owners regularly go and stretch that envelope.

I know that segway says that the HT is not appropriate for towing a trailer, but many of us do it all the time...

I am not saying to disregard the temperature warnings, just realize that it is a very well made machine that will not likely stop operating just because it is a little out of it's comfort zone...

Once you own a seg, you will find that it will often still have the ability to keep going, long after you are tired enough to want to take a break.

How long do you usually spend outside in 14 degree weather? Check your owners manual. When I got the one with my son, it had different operating temperatures than with my daughter... Still, I don't think it is recommended for humans to hang out in weather that cold for long either...
