I went on a Segway tour in Paris and the plug-in thing was open the whole time. If I get a Segway should I keep it closed with tape or something? Is it o.k. open in the rain?
Thanks,
Jack

Jack, the charge port should remain closed at all times when riding, especially in the rain (You might even want to secure it shut using tape or something down those lines in the rain). That is one of the most important enviromental seals because it is so close to the powerbase. With that being said, even I will ride around with it open sometimes, but just that one time that water gets in there, it could lead to major problems.

Jack,
I would recommend closing it all the time. One method I use is a blousing bungee (used by Marines and the like to "roll" their pant legs). It is really a very small and thin bungee strap with lightweight hooks on the end and can be found at almost any WalMart that you visit.

All of your questions (i.e. charge port covers, going over curbs, giving demos, etc.) have been the subject of much discussion on the boards. The search function is invaluable; give it a try and you'll find all the info you want, and probably lots you don't. To restate some of this;
-the charge port cover should always be closed, unless it's got a power cord plugged into it. A piece of tape across it will ensure it stays that way in rain. Water in the power base is a BAAD thing.
-going over curbs can be done fairly easily without damage to the machine. There is extensive discussion on technique and the advisability of doing it, both pro and con, on the boards.
-I think almost every segway owner gives demos...tons of them. I guess if you want to charge for them, that's up to you. Some people would probably pay willingly, but remember you then have a greatly increased liability; if someone gets hurt and you've charged them to ride, you're going to get sued, almost certainly. The question then becomes can you afford it?

Hello Jack. Welcome to the group.
One point that some people know and some do not is that the plug port cover is held on by the beveled edge around the cover and the undercut around the port. You might try to squeeze between your fingers at the cover at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position. Insert the cover and release it while making sure the bevel seats into the undercut. PD1
