View Full Version : Locks that don't lock that good?

I heard in one of the segfest sessions (Doug Fields) that the Kryptonite with the barrell key could easily be picked (someone has posted the method on the internet) - that lead to pulling it off the market for bikes and segs. Apparently they are going to eventually re-design and re-issue. Bikes first unfortunately (understandable though because of the market volume). By the way I saw one of the Krytonites mounted to the control shaft not the wheel and I never heard of that before (I must not have been paying attention).

I don't believe the locks the go right onto the wheel nut are out yet, but Kryptonite has had their standard cable lock corrected for some time. You would just run this one through your wheel. You could wrap it around the control shaft for safe keeping while not using the lock but it doesn't attach to the control shaft for locking purposes.

Hi Jeff,
The issue is that someone can steal the handlebar and controlshaft - the ideal lock (the one they had but protected from picking) would not only lock the HT to a solid object, but lock the powerbase to the control shaft.

My honest opinion....it can be picked.....but, ya know, it can be cut too.
I personally use this lock and LOVE it. Someone sitting next to my Segway working a bic pen into the barrel of my lock would be no less visible than someone cutting the lock with bolt cutters and throwing the Segway in the back of their truck.
Either way, the lock is a DETERENT...and a mighty convenient one that that. I'll stick with me 12.0mm Kryptonite!
Peace,

Nothing more to say. If someone wants your seg bad enough no lock will stop them.
On another note a friend had his Seg locked up last weekend and someone stole the control shaft !

Of the two cable locks, the hub lock <s>is</s>was superior. You snip the hub-lock cable, you're "red-handed" with the irremovable(?) hub nub still fast to the axle, the jagged remains of the cable still protruding. You could drag the HT away, but you might have a hard time laundering it.

I prefer the 12.0 mm Kryptonite lock also because of the ease of locking it to the wheel hub and because it is not coily. I just wish it was longer. I'm not too worried about the Bic pen pick. I doubt too many people know about that.
The receiver on the control base for this lock shown in the picture at the top of this topic was a beta product Segway sent to a few people to test.
Here are a couple of pix showing the strength of this lock:

Yes I really think the main issue is to deter the would be thief. Most thiefs will not go after a target that is hard. And most people in general have no idea that the control shaft and handle bar are worth what they are or how to sell it.
The lock that goes through the wheel and fender make it a real pain to steal your machine. Also a bit of a pain to install.
Hopefully when the wheel nut lock comes back out it will be longer.
