Hi everyone,
I just visited the Segway Nordic website (http://www.segwaynordic.se) and read an old news item from 20th of june which says (if I understood it correctly):
Segway Centaur is no longer a prototype, Segway LLC has determined a production take-off on the creation all of us are hoping on. The launch date will be somewhere in the summer of 2006. The Centaur is very easy and agile, it will be clasified in the EU as moped. Segway will make the centaur more gentle for on the street by adding rear view mirror, tail-light (and some other stuff which I can't translate). The centaur is a unique creation, like all the other creations of segway. The price is not determined yet, (some more stuff I can't translate, something with patents), price indication of approx. 10.000 US$.
Does anyone else have heard anything about this?
Kind regards,
Florin

I have heard it from a couple of reliable sources (indirectly related to LLC) that the Centaur will be a merketed product, although any timelines were pure conjecture.
$10K sounds about right though.

That interesting machine will be here in DC at SegwayFest for demos, for those that attend the event.
It will be great for the European Market, and no doubt that is where it will be headed!

Only because it has a tendency to use the wrong side of the road in the US.

Come on, you can't compare the centaur with the sinclair.
I don't see yet, how the centaur would be usefull on the road, but perhaps it will be usefull on many other places, like forests, beaches, etc.

I can't see it being put to its best use on the road either. It's unique characteristics make it much more of an off-road fun machine. But if they are making the Centaur "more gentle for on the street" and classifying it as a moped(!!), then I think the companison with the C5 is entirely appropiate, i.e., doomed.

It might be that they just do some minor modifications to make it possible to get it clasified. With the HT you can say that it shouldn't be seen as a vehicle and that it should belong on the sidewalks. With the Centaur that won't be possible, so to be able to ever sell the centaur in the EU (and probably many other places on the world) it has to be clasified, I don't know for sure in which category a quad is placed, but probably it's also considered as a moped. So personally I think the whole moped clasification thing is just to be able to sell them. It doesn't mean that it has to change in a sinclair. I know I translated it to "more gentle", but perhaps it should be "better suitable" or something like that. I told you, my swedish is very poor. :D

As i was looking off the balcony this morning a kid came down the street at about 30 MPH on a Quad. It was noisey as hell... I thought of this thread. The only way to recive a tax break for your vehicle if it nonemmision is if it has four wheels (No Segways) that just brought the price down from 10,000 to 8,000 with a US tax return. I tried to claim my segway last year and the year before NO GO but a Centaur, 4 wheels. I have never seen a moped with four wheels. I will most likely see a post in the next few days.
