View Full Version : A moment to reflect

I just heard the news a few minutes ago, that the shuttle Columbia was lost upon re-entry over Texas this morning. This event has nothing to do with Segways, but I thought it might be worth mentioning it on the list, and taking a moment this morning to reflect upon the loss of Columbia and her crew.

The space program has always served to inspire the youth of today to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow. It was always my dream to work for NASA in Planetary Science, and I do hope that this tragedy will not go without due recognition among the youth of this generation.

Saddened by our loss,

Mark Sunday

I'd just like to extend my condolences to the families of the astronauts aboard the shuttle Columbia. May their glide be remembered forever.

Our local news let us know last night that the shuttle would pass over this morning at 8:03 am. I'm sure hundreds of us saw it as it passed and saw things coming off. I wish I had not seen it and my heart is so sad...

mind if my segway and i pass?

This is one of those days where we'll always remember where we were when we heard the news. I'll never forget that I heard it right here.

I heard it here on this forum too, immediately went and turned on the news. So very sad. My thoughts are with the families and friends, and the whole of the Nasa teams that work so hard to be safe. Today we will mourn the loss of the seven crew members of STS-107. Tomorrow we will start again, so that the lives lost will not be in vein. They would want us to continue advancing in this field I am sure.

A shuttle goes up...a shuttle lands. It's all become so commonplace. The good that will come out of this tragedy is perhaps the chance for more people to realize, and explain to their kids, what special people astronauts are and how imporatnt the work is that they do. It's a good time to realize how dangerous space travel is and how courageous these people are.

Or some bad. Think of all the people who don't see the Space Program as a wrothy program. They'll want to cut funding so we can never dream again. Or think of all the sub programs and spinn offs that came from the space program like solar panals and swedish foam (I know you can't live without the last one ;) )

Truely a sad day for all. These heros will be missed by everyone who knew them or who knew of them. Our hearts go out to all of the families involved.

I remember where I was when I heard the news of JFK's assasination. I remember where I was when I heard the news of Dr. King's assasination. I remember where I was when I heard the news of RFK's assasination, I remember where was I when I heard the news of the Challenger disaster. I remember where I was when I heard of JFK Jr's death. I remember where I was as I watched in horror the tragic events of 911 unfold. And now I must add to my list the seven brave souls tragically lost on the Columbia.

Americans are an amazing people. We overcome tragedy and adversity always to become stronger and more united in commitment and spirit. As a nation we may bleed by losing some of our best and our brightest, but we always remember them and never forget their sacrifice. May the memory and efforts of those lost be forever a blessing.

I just finished watching "October Sky" a few minutes ago. It has helped to cheer me up. I hope many of you have had the opportunity to view this film before. If not, glide on over to the video store and rent it sometime this week. There's a great shot of the shuttle in the closing moments.

This has been a tough weekend ... and Sunday, I'll never forget this thread. Thank you.

I just can't watch TV anymore ... I feel like I know the deal, and it just ... well, I feel just like I did after the Challenger explosion in 1986. I realize that many of our younger members may not remember that day. I remember the Apollo training fire, but that's another story.

On that day in 1986, I was standing on the trading floor of the Chicago Board of Trade, watching the trading pit for US Treasury Bond futures, and occasionally glancing up at the Dow Jones and Reuters newswire screens on the exchange floor wall ... as I always did. All newswire headlines were always preceded by a time, right down to the second. I'll never forget looking up and seeing a time, and the words: "Space Shuttle Explodes." I know where I was at that very second.

On Saturday morning, 2/1/03, I slept in late, made my cup of coffee, and read the first post in this thread. It brought that day in 1986 ... and the resulting media coverage ... right back into focus. I remember people saying back then, that one day this would happen again.

As an old Ginger/IT follower, I'm pretty sure I remember reading about some relationship between DEKA Research and NASA. I'm sure there are deep friendships there.

If we don't start seeing training e-mails in the next few days ... let's give it some time.
