View Full Version : Segway Polo anyone? (NH & MA area)

Watching the Segway Polo matches over the past weekend at SegwayFest in Manchester NH got me interested in playing. SegwayFest was a blast! The BBQ at Dean's house and meeting DK in person was the icing on the cake.
Any Seg owners in the NH/MA area interested in getting together for some Segway Polo? I'm not new to Segway but I'm a total newbie to Segway Polo. I'm wondering who else in the area might be interested in playing and/or already has something started.

Check with Alex Ko and see if he can get you some tips on getting a team started there. That would be awesome.

Jen Hosker at WPI played with us at SegFest and was interested in getting a NH team going. I don't have her contact info though.
There might be some interest from LLC folks too. How far are you all from LLC?

I live in the north end of Nashua NH. I'm only about 10 minutes or so away from LLC.

I have added so many accoutrements that my machine is easily subject to damage. Polo seems rough on the extra's, not so much the machine itself... All those reservations stated, I'd surely be interested in exploring the possibiltiies of joining this team.

I'm seriously considering a second machine (an i180) in the not too distant future. One for Segway Polo and extreme segging; the other one for cargo/utility. Having any kind of lower cargo bag setup restricts movement too much...can't play Polo or do extreme segging with it. I also can't get my GF off my i170 once she gets on it. LOL. :)
Two segs are better than one! Group gliding with a friend is waaaay more fun than gliding solo.

I'm considering a polo HT and a gliding-to-work HT. I have side bags that are a pain to take on and off every week for polo.
I'd *strongly* suggest that you play polo with a naked HT-- no side bags. There are many times when you'll save yourself by jumping off the Seg, frontwards, backwards, sideways. If you have the side bag frame attached it prevents you from escaping a sideways-tilting Segway.
There may be some at LLC that want to join in. David, please email me and I'll put you in touch with the right people.

Exactly why I'm thinking about getting an i180 in the not too distant future. I know the importance of having a naked seg for Polo plus being able do emergency dismounts when required. My girlfriend and I will no longer fight over who gets to glide when we go places together. Once she gets on my i170, I can't get her off it! :-) Having 2 segs is definitely better than one. The "cool factor" among the public is also greater when they spot 2 segs in use instead of one.
I put the lower cargo bag system on my i170 right after the SegwayFest in ManchVegas (Manchester NH) but I took it off a week later. Movement is restricted too much. I like being able to carry cargo, but I also like to do extreme segging. Polo falls into the extreme segging category because of the demands placed on the rider and the machine. Right now I only have the (soft) upper cargo bag installed (12.0 bag?) that I picked up at the fest.
Alex, I'll shoot you an email later tonight (can't do it from work right now).

FYI: There are other Seg Polo teams starting in the US as well as around the world-- the most recent being China and Italy.

I'm currently coordinating the efforts along with LLC. The US Polo association is also working on adopting a version of the game.

For now, there's no central site for Segway Polo. But it's in the works.
The latest rules are posted on the Bay Area SEG site. But they'll eventually migrate over to a polo-specific site.
BTW-- I highly discourage taking fenders off for polo, unless you enjoy getting the skin rubbed off your legs when you lean.

I would be very interested in this as well. I tried playing Segway polo at Dean's house for the first time and it was awesome!!! I currently live in Merrimack, NH but will be moving to Hanover, NH for school in a couple of months. Either way I'm probably close enough.

David,
Since you were the first to bring this up, would you be willing to coordinate the NH team? I'll talk with LLC to see if their employees would be interested in joining in as well.
Matches work best when they're 4-on-4. If anyone has Jen Hosker's contact info, please let me know. I haven't heard from her since SegFest and she was also interested in playing in NH.

Chris has an interesting picture and blurb over at the Red Key http://www.wingnut.com/theredkey/ about a segway polo league starting in China with 10 teams.

Yep, that's my father, Wen, who brought one of my mallets and ball to the chairman of the China Segway Club. I've been working with them for about 2 months now to get them started.

IIRC, SegwayBoston was going to have a polo match in May, but it was cancelled to due inclement weather. I thought it was going to be rescheduled, but I haven't heard anything since.

A friend of mine told me last night that he went to the finals of the National Horse Polo Championships earlier this year, and there was a segway polo demonstration between chuckers(periods).

David, you have mail.
There's some interest from some LLC employees in participating in a NH SegPolo team. So I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get a match going with the others on this thread that have expressed interest in playing.
Rodney, the U.S. Polo Association has taken an interest in Segway Polo. Their group's monthly magazine did a story about the Bay Area team a few months ago. They are looking at using Segways as a training tool, and to help promote horse polo.
