Any XT owners out there care to share thier thoughts about the XT? Particularly the XT versus a 'traditional' Seg, thoughts on battery life, ride on hard surfaces and whether the knobly tires mark carpet....

Thanks!

John

Another female glider Mac wrote a long review on the XT. She loves it

Hi John, and welcome! We've spent quite a bit of time on the XT (we use one as a store demo) and I think it's an awesome machine. The battery range is roughly that of the p series, maybe a bit better. Although they are lithium, there is a lot more rolling resistance in the tires, so you lose a fair bit of the range you would expect from lithiums.

The ride is sublime. On broken up, rough surfaces the low pressure tires soak up a lot of the little lumps and bumps, and leave very little evidence that it's passed by. We ridden it in soft dirt, sand, gravel, mud, wet grass, etc. and although on some surfaces you can see where you've been, it's got a very minimal impact or footprint.

It's not as precise to ride as a p or and i series; the sidewall flex on the tires make it a bit slower to start, stop and turn. It's VERY stable; most new riders find it very reassuring with it's wide stance and cushiony feel. It's not great on hard surfaces in my opinion; a bit noisy (tire noise) and less manouverable. I've never seen any tire marks from it, but I would expect it would since they are rubber tires and not silica based compound. Overall, it's a great ride...we love it for R.V.ing, and back country wandering is where it really shines.
Hope this helps!

You should get more range on the XT than a p-series. It's a great machine, but definitely not for the sidewalk (both because it's bumpy on smooth surfaces and because it looks huge).

Just to clarify, the official range specs for the Segway HT p133 vs. Segway XT are as follows:

Segway XT: 10 miles
Segway HT p133: 6-10 miles
http://www.segway.com/segway/specs_compare.html

I am assuming that the range on the XT is calculated based on off-road riding. If used on dirt roads to get around the neighborhood, that range could increase. And if used super-agressively, that range could be reduced.

Is there anyone with a GPS receiver or other way to calculate mileage who can ride an XT on a smooth non-sidewalk surface for a ways to see what range it gets? :)

You know Chris, I thought we would get better range too, but it just hasn't proven out that way. It's better than the p, but not as much as I expected. One of our customers has a 170 and an XT, both used in a restaurant and he's said the same thing; about the same as the 170, sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more. It seems to make quite a bit of difference running 8lbs of air vs. the recommended 4-5, but the ride gets bouncy

We also use an XT as a demo but they are selling so fast we keep riding new ones. As Wayne stated, the ride is different, much more cushioned and not as precise on the turns. Big difference is the head-turning you get. Much greater reaction, much more instant acceptance.

Big problem we face is the low clearance for "off road" (read dune bashing) use. So much so that we are in discussions with a local manufacturer to "raise" the base unit by lowering the tires 6 - 8 inches. Not sure of the safety aspects but it sure will be fun if we get it done!

Went 11.5 miles this AM on my XT! I had one solid bar left! I love these batteries. For a long trip the XT just minimizes the bumps. I keep the tires at 4 psi. I know that I could go further with my I167 with these batteries but I'll take the comfort.

Fred,

I'm curious about the range of the XT over different surfaces.
Was your trip over dirt (off road)or concrete/street/sidewalk?

Streets/sidewalks - since you know the area - from about Rexford & Santa Monica Bl to San Vicente/Montana with an extra mile detour on the return trip - took about 1 hour 45 minutes. I think that the posted XT range is for off roading on relatively flat terrain but I certainly don't know how they calculate the numbers. You would think I would go closer to 18 - 20 miles at 12.5 mph in an hour 45 minutes (I don't think that I spent any significant time stopped at lights - my coffee bean stop was 5 minutes. A long glide is the best way to start a Sunday!

When I get my li-ions (I get 7 or so miles on my 167 with NIMHs) I'll have to join you some time!
