View Full Version : footstance on the Segway

I don't know why, but sometimes when I glide, the normal foot stance on the Seg (fender to fender) seems a little narrow. I mean at times I feel I would like to be able to spread my feet a little wider apart....

I know the Seg was designed to be no wider then the riders shoulders to travel along side walkers on the sidewalk, but ever so often the wider stance seems more normal to me.

Any thoughts on this?

Solo, are you using an i or p model? PD1

The Seg I ride is named after my Aunt Eileen.

I have the I170. In Sept I will have had it one year.

I generally ride, especially on a long glide with one foot significantly farther forward than the other. This way, you are shifting your weight from leg to leg to adjust speed.

I find it superior to pivoting from the ankle...

I do alot of spinning and dancin, for it to work my arches must be centered over the axels. Padding on the gearboxes makes it smoother when I push outward, that keeps both wheels on the ground in a high G spin.

I have been seeing on eBay for awhile now that someone is selling "Anti-fatigue Mats."

Has anyone in our community had a chance to try these out to see if they help on long glides or as they say, with the handling of the Seg?

I have noticed them for a while now and would be interested in any real life stories on use of these.

And nope, I am not, nor do I work for the seller :=)

We wnet to Walmart and bought several closed cell foam doormats, made our own. They're 1"thick, VERY soft and easy on the feet.

We cut them out on a bandsaw, but you should be able to do it with a good pair of shears as well. The part I liked best was they were on sale at 1.77 ea. so we got enough to make a dozen for around 20 dollars.

Thanks for all of the replys concerning the foot stance, but for me its not a question of my feet getting tired, but more of a security issue.

I think I trust the Seg ALMOST 100% to keep me verticle, but once in a while I think I would feel safer if I could move my feet out another 6 to 8 inches. I only feel I need the wider stance when going at top speed.

I know this sounds dumb, but a wider stance would make me feel a little more secure when gliding at faster speeds.

I just might as well get used to it, cause I know the foot print can't be any wider than it already is.

I understand that feeling of wanting the center of gravity to be balanced with a wider stance. I imagine the taller someone is, the more they may wish for a wider platform.

I noticed in riding one of the new XTs that the wider positioning of the tires (as well as the softer tire pressure) gives one a nice stable feeling in several ways -- including that desire for balance of center-of-gravity.

In any event, as I have gotten more agile with my i, I have gotten more and more used to the feet placement.

Other things that have helped are some of the good ol'safety aspects:

I have learned to have it as second nature to slow down and LOOK before crossing at blind driveways, making sure I see that a driver sees me before entering any intersection with a car nearby -- especially those making the right turns as well as watching for other obsticles.

I find also that bending my knees a little helps overcome that feeling of wishing I had a wider stance while gliding.

I bought a mat from Wayne two years ago. I wouldn't think of gliding without it. If you are planning hard turning pad your gearboxes the side of your feet will thank you.
